THE THRESHER
Heart Failire Prevalent at T. 0. Game
(Continued from Page 6)
The Houston squad now has pass-
ed the most dangerous part of their
schedule, but still has some tough
teams to play if it is to go to the
Cotton Bowl. Rice certainly didn't
lose any stature as Kentucky bowed
to SMU and LSU turned back Char-
ley Justice & Co. on a "muddy field."
The Owls' victory vaulted them up
to fifth in the A. P. national grid
picture.
The game certainly couldn't be
thought of in the same manner as
some of the SMU games last year,
although it was won in the last
seconds. The Owls definitely had
the game under their control as it
was ending and the fact that they
had been driving for some five min-
utes should be an indication of the
extent of the control that they had.
As far as injuries are concerned
Gerald Weatherly came up with a
*ore ankle, and Carl Schwarz hurt
his knee. Speedy Roberts had a rib

awards are made. The period over
which the awards are made is one
year.
The General Electric Educational

schools of the United States.
Applications for the above fellow-
ships from graduate students of the

separation and Bill Howton also
took it on his knee. But the tough-
est injury of all came to little Van
Ballard, the Electra Senior. Ballard
played for three years behind iihen
like Walmsley, Keeney, and Wyatt,
and always seeming to get a cripp-
ling injury just when he was ready
to go. He was moved to right half
early this season, and really came
into his own against New Mexico
and SMU. And now, just proving
that bad luck comes in droves to
some people, Ballard broke his col-
lar bone in the Texas game.
Texas Shorthorns Rm Bluebolts 33-20
The Rice Bluebolts dropped their
first decision of the year to the
Texas Shorthorns last Friday after-
noon at Austin, 33-20. The future
Owls led, 20-14 at half, but this
time it was the Texas boys who had
the last half drive.
The Bluebolts got their first tally
on a pass from Billy Frazier to Ray
Pfeiffer when the game was only
three minutes old. Texas roared
back to tie it up 7-7 with ten min-
utes gone. Early in the second per-
iod the Bluebolts took the lead

again, with Horton Nesrsta romp-
ing 84 yards on a punt return, after
taking a hand-off from Roland
Beckworth. The Shorthorns grabbed
a fumble on the Rice 13 and tied it
up 14-14. Nesrsta then fell on a
Shorthorn fumble on the Texas 23,
Frazier's passes moved it into scor-
ing position, and Nesrsta took it
over.
The Shorthorns came back strong
in the second half, scoring on a 68-
yard drive, with Gib Dawson eating
up the last 38 in one jaunt. A 62-
yard punt return by Andrews, and
a 36-yard return of a pass inter-
ception by Bible set up the last two
Texas scores.
Dickie Bob Haddox, Buddy
Fornes, and Billy Ed Daniels were
other backfield standouts for the
Bluebolts, with Hans Wagner, at.
guard, and Weldon Westerfer, at
center, shining in the line.
Texas had 10 first downs to Rice's
9, gained 307 total yards to 184,
and intercepted 3 passes. Both
teams recovered two opponents'
fumbles. The Bluebolts made the
powerful Shorthorns come from be-
hind, which is quite a bit considering
the loaded Texas backfield.
