21 Report for Baseball Drills
Baseball practice got under way
yesterday with Coach Harold Stock-
bridge estimating 20-25 boys out for
the Rice varsity.
The Owl baseball prospects look
good with nine returning lettermen
including David Devine, Billy
Wright, Doyle Beard, Vernon Glass,
Bob Kennedy, Rex Proctor, Bill Goli-
bart, Walter Deakin, and Richard
Leeder. Proctor, Beard, and Wright
are two-year lettermen. Squadmen
returning to the 1951 team are Mar-
tin Scheid, Bill Collins, and Hollis
Chatham.

Up from last year's freshman
team are ten good varsity prospects
in Roger Edwards, Jerome Bindsell,
Sammy Burk, Dickie Bob Haddox,
William Price, Elbert Sonntag,
Hans Wagner, Jack Taylor, Sammy
Ward, and William Witt.
Last season the Rice Owl baseball-
ers won nine and lost twelve games,
with only one non-conference loss
listed on the record.
The Southwest Conference will be-
gin for the Rice Owls on March 27,
when they encounter the Baylor
Bears up in Waco. The first home
game on the conference schedule is
against TCU on April 6.
Anyone interested in coming out
for the baseball team should con-
tact Coach Stockbridge at the Rice
Gymnasium within the next few
■weeks.
Rice Swimming
Team Closes Shop
by Nick Athaa
Due to lack of interest, the new-
ly formed Rice swimming team is
a thing of the past and one of the
future, it was learned early this
week.
Swimming Coach Jack Davis has
cancelled all conference meets and
dual meets as far as the Rice Owl
tank men are concerned. This in-
cludes the big conference meet in
March and several dual meets, one
of which was scheduled here tomor-
row against Baylor.
It was explained that the above
measure was necessary because of
the decreased enthusiasm of many
boys on the team. Since the return to
practice following finals more and

Campus Interviews on Cigarette Tests.

jM[elancholy and dejected, this gloomy miss
found little to titillate her in the recent deluge of quick-
trick cigarette tests! She was not enthralled by the idea
judging cigarette mildness with just a fast puff or a single sniff.
But, joy of joys! ... happiness came to her when she
discovered one test that left no doubt in her mind.
It was the sensible test! ... the 30-Day Camel Mildness Test,
which simply asks you to try Camels as a steady smoke —
oira pack after pack, day after day basis. No snap judgments
needed. After you've enjoyed Camels — and only
Camels — for 30 days in your "T-Zone" (T for Throat,

The Rice cagers lost another game last Monday night up
in Waco as the Baylor Bears made it two wins over the Owls
this season with a score of 61-58. In other conference games
upsets were the order of the
night Monday. TCU tripped the
leader Texas 49-34, and Arkan-
sas came up on the winning
side by downing Texas A&M 45-38
in overtime. This leaves Texas and
TCU all tied up for the conference
leadership with a 6-2 record for
both clubs. A&M is in the third
place with a 6-3 record while SMU
holds fourth spot boasting a 4-4
record, along with Arkansas with
the same .500 percentage. Baylor
and Rice trail in that order.
Tomorrow night the Blue and
Grey are hosts to Texas Christian
U. in the Rice Gymnasium in the
next to the last home game of the
1951 season.
Freshman Rule
Schools in the Southwest Confer-
ence voted down the proposed rule
to make frosh eligible for varsity
sports this season as this column
predicted they would in last week's
issue. The schools also voted down
a proposal to eliminate the one-
year resident rule on transfers from
colleges where football has been dis-
continued. The vote was four to
three on the first proposal and three
to four on the latter issue but a two-
thirds vote was necfessary in order
for the plan to pass.
Some argue that there wasn't any
need for the i-ule to be effective this
year anyway since not too many
athletes have been drawn out of
school so far to make the spring
sport situation much different from
former years, but most freshmen
were especially anxious to get into
varsity competition for fear they
won't be around netft-season because
of the draft.
The vote that has just been taken
would have put the rule into effect
immediately if it had passed and was
considered primarily a vote on the
spring sports, like track, baseball
and golf.
There is a possibility of another
vote and possible approval of the
proposal before next Fall's football
season.
