Returning to the more ex-
citing life at Rice after
summer tours abroad
are Don Gibbon, Fred Erisman,
Annette Lebauve, Alice Carmi-
chael, Herman Daly and the
ankles away Navy Boys, who
have many sea (and she) stories
to relate following their Carib-
bean escapades.

- For the Riceite who spent a
less exotic summer, the social
season at R. I. offers welcome
variety. An informal party at
Wiess College after the Blue-
Gray game found Doris Winans
and Temple Tucker, Barbie Scott
and Don Coney dancing to the
hi-fi. Among those who' preferred
the 1500 Club for post game "re-
laxation" were Fred Henry and
Ann Farrr>er, Boogie Todd and
"of course George."

Have you boys noticed a
dearth of femme fjnces this
week? Blame it on 'the first
of three rounds of rush which
has occupied the girl's after-
noons with teas, luncheons and
quilting bees. I know you'll be
sorry to hear — no dates to
Rush parties this year.

Nicky Nichols, Frank Dris-
coll, Jim Bower and a few
thousand Jones girls enjoyed
the Marks music at Hanzsen's
Dance Sunday night. Segovia
played . . . and played.

"Attentive" Will Rice boys
concentrated their efforts Mon-
day1 to impress Frosh innocents
with one-way limousine service
to transport the precious cargo.
Footmen Henry Gissel, Ben Or-
man, Bob Bolin, Pert Virtanen
and Ernie Montaigne helped
make the (evening a big success
for the ladies fair.

lopsided this summer by remov-
ing diamond laden Cille Brooks,

son, Mary Catherine Anderson,
Jackie Bartell and Cody Caldwell
from the eligible list.
Nancy Connor and Allen Zama,
Sue Thruston and Bob Lee, Alige
Cowan and Paul Cochran, Ruth
Barnes and Charlie Thompson
tied the knot this summer.

The saddest tale of all is told
by leftie Bob Elster who hit a
truck and broke his left hand.
Why didn't you hit it with your
right hand, Boib?

Ratio Evil Falls:
Froth Only 3-1
By MARY ANNE BOONE
The Rice Institute is a changed
place this year except in two
respects. The boy-girl ratio in
the freshman class remains, as
in the past, a bit lopsided, and
the studies continue.
The freshmen have a new look
with blue J and gray beanies.
Guidance is strictly optional.
Girls are living on campus for
the first time. Amid all these
firsts, the freshmen felt that they
should keep up one tradition by
having in their ranks 123 girls
and 354 boys—about a 3-1 ratio.
Contrary to popular opinion,
the studies are still a part of the
curriculum. As one upperclass-
man aptly put it at the fresh-
man picnic, "Look around you
and shake hands with the per-
son on your left and the person
on the right, he may have flunk-
ed out the next time you see
him."

Boy! Good ole school really
started with a bang today. After
being awakened by ear shatter-
ing curses of roommate who had
just discovered that all five
classes met at 8:00, wandered
through maze of faculty parking
lots to commons to partake of
breakfast of raw eggs, trichin-
ella-infested ibacon, and sour milk
from disconted cows.
Then went to class (barf) and
•heard age-old jokes of age-old
profs while dodging frogs thrown
with gusto. After joyously noting
the conflict the administration
had carefully arranged, took
place in line and heard helpful
instructions ("Don't just stand
there, jerk. Circle!") and finally
reached sharp looking secretary
(obviously hand-picked by ad-
ministration) who smiled and
took five dollars. . . while saying
"I hope this doesn't inconvenience
you!"
Tried to get back to class but
got lost once more in maze of
faculty parking lots and gave up
and died.

Speaking of things dead,
there will be a moment of si-
lence for the four students who
were pursued and crushed by
Bridey Mackey (Brown-Root
construction worker) while at-
tempting to cross the Rice
Turnpike from the stadium. A
detailed report of the hilarious
disaster was submitted by a
jubilant proctor at the student
council meeting. "First there
was fiendish laughter, then the
roar as the speeding 600 horse-
power Edsel ran down and
backed over the squirming,
wiggling students. Then Bri-
dey hopped out giggling "We
hope this doesn't inconvenience
you:

It was announced today that

scalp of legally run-down (as
above) male student will receive
a medal from the Beat the Rice
