IN THE VILLAGE
Chamber Music With Vigor
To an overflow crowd in the
lecture lounge last Wednesday
night,, the Lyric Art Quartet
gave an energetic performance
of works of Haydn, Prokofiev,
and Schubert, the first of four
concerts for the season.
No one was disappointed; this
group now familiar to the Rice
campus played with its custom-
ary precision and zeal.

The attack and finesse of their
ensemble playing has never been
better. Mrs. Eichhorn played with
all he* usual vigor, if perhaps a
little more roughly than usual;
and Miss Davies again demon-
strated her rare combination of
the qualities of virtuoso techni-
que and complete understanding
of the requirements of quartet
playing.
The programming was uncom-
monly good.
The host of similarities be-
tween the Haydn "Sunrise"
quartet and the Prokofiev opus
92 accentuate the different in-
tentions of the two composers
and suggests the vast range of
expression which the string
quartet can accomplish.
Next Concert
We are delighted to have the
Lyric Art Quartet back at Rice
for another season. The next con-
cert of the series will be given
January 9.
Rice students are advised that
string quartet performances any-
where are hard to come by, and
performances of this quality are
rare indeed. But if they want a
seat, they'll have to go early.
Chances are that next year
even the 500 seats in the new
auditorium will soon become in-
adequate.
