THE OWLOOK
By CLARENCE TEMPLE
The Rice Institute has a good
baseball team. With a season re-
cord of seven wins and four de-
feats and a conference score of
three wins against two defeats,
the current Owls have accom-
plished what no other Rice nine
has ever done: they led the
league.
Championship Chance
Texas dropped the Owls to sec-
ond place last Tuesday in a fast,
well-played game, but the Owls
have an excellent chance to bring
the school its first conference
baseball championship. Led by
the league's best infield, Rice's
defense is greatly improved over
last year and only a weak hit-
ting outfield and erratic catching
hinder the Owls' overall perform-
ance.
Improving
The catching is improving, and
Donaldson turned in a solid game
against Texas. The pitching is
adequate with Springer (1-1)
Erskine (1-1), and Brock (2-2)
starting, and Timme (2-0) doing
a good job in relief. The primary
factor in the team's performance
at this point seems to be its
confidence in itself.
Confidence Problem
Against the Aggies, they had
the confidence and assurance of
a championship club, and kept

the pressure on until they literal-
ly squeezed three runs out of the
Aggie infield. Against Texas,
however, they never seemed to be
able to come through on scoring
opportunities as they did the
previous Saturday. The impres-
sion was that at times they were
having to fight themselves as
well as Texas. Attitude is all im-
portant. If they decide they can
win the title, they can take it.
Fine Plays
The game Tuesday against
Texas had some fine plays. The
best of the day in our opinion
was the play of Arnette in the
eighth inning when Donaldson
was on second with two out. The
Texas outfield were playing in
close against Murray, knowing
they would have to get the jump
on any ground ball to the out-
field. The play developed exactly
as anticipated when Murray lined
a bouncer through second base.
Arnette charged the ball fast
and fired a perfect throw to the
plate. The Rice third base coach,
seeing Arnette's excellent posi-

2ND PLACE AT TEXAS RELAY
Trinity, Baylor
Coach Sammy Giammalva's
Rice tennis squad continued their
winning ways Friday and Sat-
urday with consecutive victories
over Trinity and Baylor.
In Friday's encounter with
Trinity the Owls scored a 4-2
victory, winning two of four
singles matches and both doubles
matches. Ronnie Fisher and Art
In Waco Saturday the Owls
really showed their power by
sweeping six matches from the
Bruins while losing only two sets.
The Owl netters return to
action Monday here in Houston
as they encounter Lamar Tech.

the season as they take on SMU,

Relying mainly on the speed
of sophomore Taylor Jones, coach
Emmett Branson's Owl trackmen
scored a surprising 24 points at
the Texas Relays Saturday to
place a very encouraging second
among the SWC school entered
at the meet.
Fine Start
The Owls got off to a fine start
in Friday night's opening com-
petition with a first place victory
in the 880 relay and a third place
in the broad jump. Rice's 880
foursome of Mickey Hollingshead,
Leonard Faucett, Charlie Rouse,
and Jones fought off the threats
of ACC, the U of H, and Texas
to post an amazing 1:24.3.
Third Fastest Ever
This clocking by the Owls was
the third fastest 880 relay aver
run in Memorial Stadium. Al-
though one never wishes to have
just the third best time, one must
also remember that the two
fastest 880 times ever run in
Memorial stadium belong to the
former world record shattering
relay teams of Texas and ACC
composed of such accomplished
tracksters as Eddie Southern and
Bobby Morrow.

and 24-7 broad jump series last
