THRESHING IT OUT
Students Protest "Jest"
To the Editor:
As student of The Rice In-
stitute, we value the atmosphere
of trust we enjoy under the self-
regulation of the Honor System.
We resent the statements about
the Honor System that appear-
ed in the recent Weaver-Geis
column in The Thresher. The at-
titude shown in this irresponsible
effort at humor is one we have
not been accustomed to observe
among Rice students. It is hoped
that in the future, students will
exercise their ability to discern
between healthy jest and thought-
less drivel.
SIGNATURE OF 66 STUDENTS
Ed. Note The controversial passage,
extracted from the Oct. 2 issue, page
five — "The cheating, however, is really
In bad shape. What is the matter? Sora^
of you aren't trying. Come on, turn in
your roommate. They do it in Rus-
sia . . ." . . we were admitted
to the Honor Council's inquisition cham-
ber. Expose . . . there is dust on the
lieretic seat . .
We feel that Rice students are fully
capable of discerning between tongue-in-
cheek jest and pointed satire, and with
this in mind, this portion of the Weaver-
Geis column was published. To those
who interpreted the passage otherwise,
Tve of Tlje Thresher sincerely apologize,
for we also value the trust placed in
Rice students under our Honor System
—if not in certain other campus
activities.
For More Unity..
To the Editor:
There has been much con-
troversy on campus recently-
regarding the advantages of
the college system versus its
disadvantages. I would like
to express my views on this
system, especially as it con-
cerns the Class of '63.
I use the above term very loose-
ly, for in reality, there is no
"Class of '63." Instead, we have
Wiess Freshmen, Hanszen Fresh-
men, Will Rice Freshmen, Baker
Freshmen, and Jones Freshmen.
To be sure, each college is uni-
fied under its own guidance sys-
tem, and college spirit is excel-
lent.
More Togetherness . . .
What most of us fail to realize,
or at least emphasize, is that we
are all students of The Rice In-
stitute, and as such ought to be
standing together, rather than
warring among ourselves.
What can be done about this?
I believe that the chief reason
for all the trouble is that the
members of one college don't
have much opportunity to met
the members of the other col-
leges. Through the short-sighted-
ness of the faculty, our classes
are segregated according to col-
leges, so that is out.
Inter-College Activities
One possibility remains. It is
up to us, the fi'eshmen in all the
colleges to make up for this by
taking advantage of every op-
portunity to meet studnts in the
other colleges, and to do things
together, rather than sepai'ately.
Why not inter-college beer par-
tis, dances, pep rallies, etc? And
I don't mean the kind where one
college tries to outyell another.
We're backing an Institute team,
not a college team.
A Unified Spirit
I feel sure that with 801114^801^
of whole-hearted effort of this
kind, we can again build up our
school spirit, the spirit of The
Rice Institute, without detracting
from our college spirit.
But this depends on actions
They're a "must" because
they're the "most"!

CHUCK YINGLING
Which Campanile
To the Editor:
I am almost in accord with
whoever has desired that the
Campanile be cleaned up. It is
just that they have chosen the
wrong one to clean.
Our Illustrious Bell Tower be-
hind the Mechanical Engineer-
ing Building is now a muddy
reddish-brown, and its appear-
ance could be improved consider-
ably by a good sand-blasting.
As for the Yearbook—What
could they do to clean it up?

ance.
