Improvements at Kay ft Elliot's.
For the past week mechanics
have been busily engaged in al-
terations at the big department
store cf Ray & Elliott. The rear
end of the building is the center
of operations. The shoe depart-
ment is receiving considerable
attention and will be made more
attractive. The stairway which
formerly occupied space along
the south wall is made to enter
the balcony from the center, and
the business office over against
the south wall. These changes
were made necessary by reason
of the extension of some of the
departments, for which Mr. Ray
bought very extensively while in
the eastern markets. The fall
stock is nartly in and the place
takes on a very metropolitan air.
Belton takes much pride in the
Ray & Elliott place, it being on€
of the most up-to-date depart-
ment store in central Texas.

Clothes Make The Man.
A "Hand-me-down" suit is all
right if it tits, but a suit suppos-
ed to be made to measure is not
all right if it does not tit. Every
body cant take a measure and
make a suit fit. It'requires ex-
perience to take a measure'right.
Bishop has the experience and
can take a measure and make
your suit fit.

A Board that Should be Abolished.
The board on which the official
notices are posted at the court
house is an institution that is not
at all in keeping with the prog-
ress of modem times. We doubt
very much whether one out of a
hundred citizens knows where
thai board is, much less saw it.
Public and court notices should
receive "the widest circulation
possible, and that can be had
only through the newspapers.—

The Master Key That Unlocks.
The door that leads to success
is business education. Success
is achieved by the one who sees
clearly the goil of his object and
goes straight to it. Young man,
there is only one straight road to
success, and that road is ability.
Ability has never yet lacked op-
portunity, neither has it remained
undiscovered. A great many
business men are anxious to se-
cure the services of a good book-
keeper, stenographer, or a gen-
eral office assistant. To meet
the business man's require-
ments, the appliQant must be
thorough and practical. To this
end and aim we put forward our
est efforts ancl because oi our
good teaching and superior
methods we give our students a
better training in three or four
months than they can get at
other schools in five and six
months. Bear in mind, it is only
a few steps from Hill's Business
College to a good paying position.
Everything is high grade and
right up-to-date. With us you
learn bookkeeping by keeping
books. Our system of short-
bano is the best and shortest in
the country, It is simplified,
and is easy to learn, easy to read
and write and is practical. Big
summer reduction. Our $100
combined scholarships are now
$00; $75 scholarships are $50; $50
scholarshids are down to $25, $35
and $40; telegraphy $25; mail
course in shorthand $20, or $5
for five lessons. Address Hill's
Business College, Waco, Texa «>
or Memphis, Tenn.
My First Experience.
I was born and raised in Geor-
gia, came to Alabama in 1888
hunting work. The first place
I went to was a saw mill. I went
up to the boss and asked him did
tie want any more hands (He said
yes). I asked what he was pay-
ing (He told me). I askea what
he was getting for 1st class lum-
ber (He told me); what he was
getting for 2nd class lumber
(He told tne); what for 3rd class
£He told me). I asked if he was
running the mill for'some one
else or had it rented (He said
no). I asked him if he owned
the mill. Ho gave me a look that
I shall never forget and said:
"Look here,young man, by g ,
you come back some Sunday or
rainv day, and I will tell you all
about my business."
From then till this good day I
have tried to saw wood. Let the
other man's business alone. It
don't matter if he owns it or
rents it or is selling at o_* under
cost.
