Ill Politics the l!a/.ette s!;all. for the!
present remain neutral. Tin1 nation lias
just emerged from a struggle such us
shook the foundation of the (bjveinnient
to its centre, and it is hoped that we may
Hove be permitted to enjoy a season oi
(|ii!ot repose, in which the energies of our
en'erprisiiig people may be devoted more
uiid.videdly to the peaceful pursuits of
Lie, and the development of the exhaust-
less resources which nature has lavished
upon our broad and noble State. Should
a crisis arrive, however, in the future of
our political alfairs, in which the honor
and the interest of the South should be
involved, we trust that we would not be
found laggards in the contest, or shield-
ing ourselves behind the fortress of neu-
trality, but, nerving ourselves for the
contest, our position should be boldly and
fearlessly taken in defence of the rights
and the honor of our own State and sec-
tion.
With this brief and hasty outline of
the course we intend to pursue, we ear-
nestly and respectfully invoke the aid of
our friends, and all those who may think
us capable of redeeming the pledges here-
in made.
In order that the Eastern-Texas Gazette
may come within the means of those in
the most limited circumstances, and with
the view of giving it the broadest possi-
ble circulation, it will be afforded to cislt
subscribers at the very low price of Two
Dollars a year, strictly in advance.
