The name of the authoress of the above work speaks
volumes in its favor, and in-thia he baa produced the
crowning effort of her pen. For freshneaa and vigor of
thought and atyle, and for originality—in the charming
viowa of country life at the "Old Farm House"—in the
•triking illustrations of the follies of a fashionable city
life—in her description of good and evil natures in all
tbe various subjects which she has touched with her
magic pen, ahe cannot be excelled. The gentle heroine
Amy is a model of patience aad virtue, persecuted bv
the evil genius of her life, the vfflain Staunton.
The book will be read with aridity, and tone who

Yield or Corn*.—Mr. John W. Kay in->
forms us tliat he raised this season, upon the
Kuykendall place, in Missouri Valley, in thin
county, twenty-five acres of corn, that yield-
ed, upon measurement, over sixty bushels per
acre. Mr. K. bestowed no unusual labor up-
on the cultivation of his corn, but allowed
the suckers, or young sftoots to grow, in-
stead of stripping them off, as is usual; be-
lieving. as he says, that Nature would not
cause them to grow, unless they were ot*
some use.—Advocate.

not seem to prevail to a good extent, although
there is considerable sickness in the city ami
vicinity, chiefly confined to strangers and un-
acclhnatcd persons. Tho Sexton's report,
shows seven deaths from yellow fever from
Autrtist SO to September 7, inclusive, neat ly
all foreigners. From present indications we
