Joao. It had been for some time unoc-
cupied, but shortly boforo Christmas six
years ago—the year of the! Occurrences
I am relating to you—the neighbors
thought they discovered tttttat it some
obsoure signs of habitation. On Christ-
mas night at midnight, just as the bells
of the convent had ceased ringing, the
whole Island', was startled by a succes-
sion of plerolng shrieks. It was a wom-
an's voice, apparently in tho extremity
of terror. Some boatmen returning
from'tho city affirmed that,colnoldontly
with the shrinks, they had seen by tho
moonlight a figure in white leaping from
the rock which juts into the water yon-r.
dor; and this statement was further oon-
roborated by the disaovery the next
morning of the traoksof tiny bare foot
leading through the sand from the villa
to the rock. Cno of the Windows too,
was shattered, and it wm believed to
be through this that the fugitive made
her escape. It Was at once surmised
that Senhor Joao had caused Carita to
be brought secretly to the deserted
fazenda, which had been his father's,
and that after the anxious interest in
his disappearance had, in some degree,
died down, he, with motives whioh may
roadily be conjectured, had appeared
suddenly in her chambor with midnight
solioituao and a guarded prlson-hotiso
for his allies, and that in terror and
desperation she had broken through the
casement, fled shivering from her per-
secutor and buriod herself in the sea.
But although this seomed a porfootly
natural conjocture, there was no proof
that it wan true. The shrioks, as it was
said by the few partisans of ' Sonhor
Joao, might have boon those of a fish
erman's wench beaten by liini on his re-
turn from the holiday festivities of the
city, the tracks might have been those
of a barefooted child, tho white disap-
pearing image springing from the crest
of rook soon by the returning boatmen
tho vision of intellects disturbed with
deep potations of C'axaoho. Moreover,
although tho wators wore searched with
tho greatest diligence, nothing was
found confirmatory of tho suspicions
against Senhor Joao. But from that
day to this no trace has over boon dis-
covered of Carita. She seems to have
passed from the world as completely as
if she had never been a dweller on it.
•'And Sonhor Joao?" said thft Admi-
ral, after a brief pause, Ills countenance
indicating tho interost willi whioh the
narration had inspired him.
"He went abroad shortly after
wards," said Mr. Carstonl "and ha*
never returned. Since tho death of
Sonhor Kamon it was found that ho had
been sonding his fortune abroad secrc.t-
ly, but with tho utmost diligence and

only bo learned that she had for a num-
ber of years been a postulant at the

name and family were unknown even
to tho sisters of that foundation. It
was subsequently ascertained that she
had come thither from the Convent of
the Iihailu tlobernador, but both her-
self and Father Petre were dead before
it beoamo publicly known that she was
the daughter of Sonhor Kamon, tho
midnight fugitive, who had fled
from tho terrible advances of Senhor
Joao and sought a dospernte and
terrified refuge beneath the midnight
wators. Sho had been providentially
rescued by Father Petro, who was re-
turning to his cloister from a visit to a
neighboring island, whither he had
been summoned to perform some ur-
gent priestly office, and conveyed la his
boat to the Island of the Governors,
where she was placed in ohargo of the
lady superior of the convent, to whom
alono was Confided the secret of her
history, that with her recovery she had
loved her preserver and lie had loved
her with a love as intense, and as the
future showod, as ill-starred as that of
Abelard and Holoise. When it soemed
as if; his earthly passion was about
to lead him to abjure his
sacred vows, the , knowledge
came to him through a fellow-priest Who
had been the confessor of Senhor Ku-
mon, that between himeolf and Carita
there existed a close t'e of consanguin-
ity. Both were tho children of the same
father. Their dream of breaking their
fidelity to tho Church, ai?d in another

Sho passod secrotly and by night to the
Convent of the Ajuda, irorn which she

The Kan who Saw An Alligator.
Somo weeks ago a Twenty-third
Street operator spoeulatd onoruiouslv
in "wheat upon tho bull side of the"
market, ana his twenty-third Street
friends, as well as 'Chicago dealers,
wore appalled at tho magnitude of its
transactions. lie was very successful
in hip purchases, and, becoming elated
thefoby, took slightly more stock in the
flowing bowl than his system required.
Ono morning recently a large box ar-
rived at the Twonty-tlnril Street offices,
directed to C. J. Osborn, well known us
ono of Jay Gould's brokers. It was
deposited in tho room wliore tho prin-
pai speculators wOro congregated, and
many were tho surmises as to Its con-
touts. The bill of lading merely de-
scribixl it an "ono box and contents
from New Orleans, value $100." The
carpenter who was summoned to open
the box, after pulling off the top antl
tearing away a mass of moss and sea-
weed, uncovered a lively alligator eager
for a iiieal. Upon its back win pasted
a label. "A member of the Ketu ruing
Board of Louisiana.". ,
There was a universal drawing of
logs up on chairs and "tables ni this
membor of the Keturning Board crawled
about the floor in bis anxiety to appease
a whetted appetite.
Just then tho wheat-speculator was
noticed slowly wending his way across
Fifth Avenue toward tho offices. His
brow was sadi and his appearance
roally was suggostivo of ft struggle with
eoorot sorrow and rcmorso.
An idea struck B. F. Carver.
" All sit still," said ho, " and, when
he comes in and speaks about the alli-
gator, make believe that you dont'l see
the reptile."
In walked tho speculator.
The alligator was slowly making its
way About the /oom, opening and clos-
ing its huge jaws with a snap worthy a
bull-terrier.
"Great Cicsar! Carver, whoso alli-
gator is that!"'
" What alligator!"' asked Carver.
" Why, that ono crawling about tho
