some organization, aS most of
tliem are, tllev have been
dwarfed by party i'ealty and
devotion to the personal ends of
asj'iriiig demagogues. Many
an editor has been , kept poor,
and his intiiu-uce and usetulness:
destroyed, in this way. There
is a seuse of personal degrada
tion in this prostituting of oners'
powers, under the binding and
cruel force of necessity, Which
recludes all.aspi,i:ati6n for a high
and nobler position. Then the
press is made contemptible'by
the low order of partisan a]>peals
to prej udice arid passion, aud by
peisonul assaults upon opposing
candidates and upon each other.
Critic-ism is essential to the elu-
cidation of truth ; wit, satire and.
ridicule are justifiable, weapons
of partisan warfare; the public
action of every pulic servant is a
proper Subject of debate ; uud
double-dealing, fraud' and cor-
ruption' should be held' up to
scor.n and contempt. But why
descend to"mere personal abuse
and ribaldry and defamation i
Who does not see that these
weapons~always distasteful to
just and .honorable minds, and
regarded as mournful evidences
of debasement in the most skill-
ful hands—become utterly dis-
-gusting when the epithet or in
sinuation is blurted out in coarse
language and limping rhetoric ?
As Hamlet said to the players :
'•Oh, reform it altogether." Let
lis shake off tbes&shackles of an-
m;worthy partisanship, let-the
press cease to be the mouthpiece
of individual aspirants; let us
approximatO as uenr as possible,
amog ourselves, to the imperson-
ality of- the English method.
Let us give the profession new
dignity, and, therefore, in-
creased character, among - our
countrymen, and thus unitedly
raise its influence to a higher
level and spread it over a
broader field. -
