nying documents cover one hundred and thirty
pages of ^rinteil matter," a perusal of winch
will satisfy anyone that the Third Auditor
has given the subject a careiul, laborious, ;md
thorough examination.
These claims had previously been the sub
ject of investigation and report by n com'uis
sion appointed by the Secretary of War, by
virtue of an act of Congress passed August 8,
lSo'5. That commission allowed claims to the
amount of si* million eleven thousand four
hundred and fifty-seven dollars and thirty six
cents, exclusive of claims for spoliation of pro
perty by hostile Indians, which were not acted
on by it. The Third Auditor reduces th
mount of the claims allowed by the former
commission to the sum of two million seven
hundrtd and fourteen thohsind eight hundred
and eight dollars and titty-live cents. The av
enrage number qf volunteer troops in the field
in Oregon for^en months was 1,-Wfi, and the
average number in Washington tor twelve

tit' which the sum allowed by the Auditor, £2,

were reduced by the scaling of that officer to
as low a figure .as he could prudently bring
them, in view of £he,testimoay elicited by him
in the investigation.
It is to be regretted that the report cannot
„ be had and read by all the people in the land
so that an inside view might be. had by them
into the way in which thoBe Indian war debts
;e made up AS the claims were made up
and report*a by the original commission, the
cost for the pay and subsistence of eich soldier
in the service in Oregon would be at the rate
of eh ce* dollars and ffty " 'it* per day, or

According to the approved mode of managing

delights to deal in We hope the Third Au-
ditor h s killed this plundering sehejtoe, but
we fear the Lobby will be more potent than
his able and honest report-—Status awl Uaion.
The arrival of the Pony Express exeited the
wonder and admiration of the Calitornians.
The papers are full ot remarks regarding the
journey. The Herald states that by jtbe Ex-
ym t, they were " in receipt of letters only
•onrteen days from Washington city-1—an air
line d^tance of over three thousand five hun-
dred and fifty thilcs—showing a*sp««d ot two
hundred and fifty miles a day, obtained by
steamboat, railroad, magnetic telegraph- and
horseflesh."' In another portiou of the same
juiper we have the following :
It took 75 ponies to make the trip from
! Missouri to California in 10i days, but the
last'one—the little fellow who catne [down iu
the Sacramento boat this morning, had' the vi-
carious glory of them all. He wai the verita-
ble Hippogriff who shoved a continent behind
his hoof so easily ; who snutfed up sandy plains,
seat lakes and mountains, prairies and forests,
whizzing behind him, like or.t great river
rushing eastward ; who left a wake like a
dipper's, '• curried a bone in his mouth," and
seut his fame rippling olT uorth and south, as
nothing has done for years; who frightened
whole tribes of Indians, that thought it was
an arrow whittled iuto a pony's shape that
whizzed by who made eagles and all swilt-
winged birds heartsick, and sent theiu into
convention to devise meaiures to kuep their
reputation up; who crossed tho railroad track
fifteen miles out of Sacrameuto, just a3 the
cms had paused/and got into the City of the
Plains just as the cars arrived!
If we were Egyptians, and living several
centuries ago, we should set up that pony in
the pla?a to day, and all of us go worshipping
him. But as we are not. but simple Califor-
niums, many of us spending four or five pi^n_ j
ous months in getting here, all could do !

Cairo asi> Fi lto.n Railhoad.—The aa-1
xiiiat meeting of tho stoek-hol lers of this road
took place in Little Roek' on the 7th ult — I
The President reports the road in a pretty fair
condition. During the meeting of the stock j
holder.- in 1859, the company ordered an is*ue !
,1' five million dollars of seven per cent, twen-
ty y - ar bonds, to be used for raising money
iid in iterials for the construction of their road,
and place all their lands and property in a
deed of trust, to secure the payment of these
bonds, with their semi annual interest. This
order has been carried into effect. The presi-
dent says the prospect, of building the road is
good. It is approaching the boundary of this
Slate rapidly. The president has gone on to
Pocahontas to contract with a p-.irty of men
living in. this State to complete the work to
W lute River from the Missouri line—a dis-
tance ol seventy miles. The people of Ark-
ijjisas should wake up to a sense ot their duty
and go to worlc. We have natural and com-
mercial resources in our Stite eijual to any in
the I nioii ; and why not develop them ? Th"
rapid piosperity of our State--its great im-
provement in wealth and civilization—calls
tor a system of Railroads for its development
rid to render its rich lands and healthy cli-
mate attractive Let us have railroads spati-
ing our forests and mountains, and Arkansas
will be the brightest star iu the galaxy.— Tnu

Pretty Well Pone.— Not many weeks
ago, a rifle corps, which had just, bee" formed
in a manufacturing town in the north of Eng-
md, held a meeting for the purpose of choos-
ing officers. It was known that there were
many candidates for the office, but. the exact
state of the cse w;is nn understood until the
time of election. It was then proposed that
all tho«e desirous ot becoming officers should
cave the ro- m, when, to the general astonish-
ment, it was found that only three* members
' the company were left to proceed to busi-
less The three uentlemen left to do the
work, however, did not flinch from their duty,
an<' on those who had retired being summoned
b:>.ck to the room, they were informed that the
meeting had felt great difficulty in making a
selection among so many eligible candidates,
and that the meeting had adopted tho m«st
obvious way ot escaping the difficulty by elect-
ing themselves to the vacant posts.

BROWNING'S
BALSAMIC EXPECTORANT!
,rT1HIS valuable and unfailing remedy, after hav-
I ing been used with unparalleled success for
many years, in a very extensive practice, is now of-
fered to the public in such a manner as to be within
the reach of aU, and will be found a safe and speedy
cure of
Coughs, Colds, Asthma, Bronchitis, Pains in
the Side, Spitting of Blood,
and all diseases of the pulmonary organs. It is
prepared exclusively from vegetable substances,
known to exercise a soothing influence on the lungs,
and can be given with perfect safety to the youngest
child.
Every one should be impressed with tbe necessity
of attending in time to slight cold; from the neglect
of it, how many thousands have been hurried into
an early grave by that enemy of the human race,
Consumption, who, by taking the proper remedy,
at the proper time, might have lived along and hap-
py life ?
Browning's Balsamic Expectorant
is pronounced to be the proper remedy foe all dis-
eases of the pulmonary organs Its preparation is
no secret, the manner and materials of its composi-
tion being at the command of any of the faculty who
apply for it, and they invariably recommend it in
their practice, in preference* to anything else.
Certificates and full directions accompany each
bottle. vj
