All who are in search of a suitable
location for a plantation—and there
must be many in qaeat of such things
just at present—bad better give their
first attention to the large and advan-

Gen. 8beridan baa submitted a re-
port to tbe War Deparment from
Captain Cbarles W. Raymond, of the
Engineer Corps, on the great Yukon
river ot Alaska, giving the result of
his reeon no Usance. He was instruct-
ed to determine tbe geographical po-
sition of Fort Yukon, a post of the
Hudsoo Bay Company, soma two
thousand miles more or less, op the
n ->r from its month; to obtain m
much information as practicable of the
trade of tbe river and its resources
and of the number and disposition of
the native tribes of the vslley, the
amount of trade carried on in Alaska
by tbe Hadson Bay Company, &c.
He fonnd Fort Yukon to be within
the limits of our new purchase, and
so, in pursuance of instructions from
the Treasary Department, the Hud
son Bay Compsny were notified to
leave. Tbe trade of the coontry
(tbe great main body of Alaska) is
limited to fars. Agriculture is out of
tbe question in those bigb snd sunless
latitudes, and the timber of the Yn-
kno is small and of poor quality. The
native Indians, it further appears, are
being rapidly killed off by the cold,
in consequence, no doubt, of the whis-
key introduced among them by the
Hadeon B*y tradeis.
The great Yukon river, however, in
length and breadth is described (tbe
Amazon first and the Mississippi sec-
ond) as the third largest fresh water
stream in the world, and enormous
quantities of fish are fonnd in ita
lower portion and in all the inlets ot
the Alaska seaboard. From the book
of Captain Whimple (a British officer)
published some time ago, of his ex-
plorations of the Yukon, trom the far
interior to the sea, it will be seen that
Captain Raymond's report is sastaiu
ed, both io regard to the length,
breadth and volume of the river and
the character of the country drained
by it. But still we desire to know
something more of that hitherto on-
known Arctic stream, and we would
therefore again submit to Gen. Grant
the propriety and expediency of de-
tailing in the spring a speciafstcamer
with a corps of scientific men aud
some newspaper reporters on board,
for a regular exploration of the Yu-
kon to the head of navigation. As
tho river flows through the heart of
Alaska, from the Rocky Mountaius
northwestward, all that is nescessary
to be known ot tbat vast territory
would be learned by this river expe-
dition.—N, Y. Herald.
