COLORADO SCENERY.
The Editor la Colorado.
Someone has said that "Colorado is
the Switzerland of America." The
comparison would be truw if it were
stated thus: "Switzerland is the Col-
orado (f Europe." History,tradition,
fashion, have cast their spell over the
hills of Switzerland, and the Alps
have become the fiyuonyui for gran-
deur. Cast the glamour of romance
over the mountains of Colorado, twine
the tendrils of tradition around the
brow of Sierra Blauca or the crest of
grand old Ouray, turu the tide of fas-
hion toward the West, and then com-
pare the Rocky Mountains with the
Alps. Or reverse the process, strip
the Alpine heights of their garniture
of legendary lore and with uubiased
mind measure iheir magnificence
with that of the great Rocky Range.
Theu and then only, cau a just com-
parison be made. If extent be a
measure of merit, thou the great
mountain system that belts the North
American continent is assuredly sup-
erior to the lesser boldric of Switzer-
land, but aside from this the variety
and the grandeur of our own home
mountains must command the admir-
ation of all who behold them and en-
force the concession that eveu though
the sceuery be American it equals iu
ail cases, and excels iu many, that of
much lauded Europe.
Colorado is the laud of color, the
bind of form, the l^ud of startling
variety. Monotony is aa unknown
quantity, beauty is preseut every-
where, while grauduer greets the rev-
ereut eyes of all who traverse the fast-
nesses of her Rocky M<.untaius,those
everlasting hills that tower, snow-
crowned. as if to pierce the bright
and stainless blue of the suu illumin-
ed sky.
Every variety of scenerv cau lie
found iu Colorado, from the vastnoss
of the level plain, extending to the
far horizon's rim. to the vastness of
the mountains, climbing iu splintered
pinuaclns to the very zeuith. Canons
whose abysmal depths awe the soul,
vallevs whose Arcadian loveliness de-
light the heart, rivers whose rushing
waters thrill with their tumultuous
sweep, mountains whose serried ranks
terrify with their stupendous magni-
ficence, forests whosa frost-touched
foliage glows with tints of fire or
glooms with the dark beauty of bal-
samic pines, brooks crystal in their
clearness, singing sylvan songs over
golden gravel, waterfalls like festoons
of filmy lace ornamented with a fret-
work of diamond water drops, (lowers
that "paint the meadows with de-
.light," or bloom amidst eternal snows,
all these are found iu this laud aud
from a symphouy whose haunting
beauty, once having beeu experienc-
ed, can uever be forgotten.
Variety is the striking characteris-
tic of Colorado scenery. Canons,
peaks aud passes awe the beholder
with their grauduer, but lakes, whose
crystal mirrors refl jet the cerulean
hues of peaceful over-arching skies,
abound—hundreds of thaai uuhonor-
ed ami uusung—but others knowu to
the lovers of the beautiful aud eu-
shrined in the annals of literature.
Every mood of mm fia ts hare an
answeriug mood in Nature. The val-
leys smile with gen' le contentment,
the brooks laugh with j >cuud glee,
the rivers rage with savage fury iu
their wild race through their rocky
chaunels, tho canons frown with soin
ber gloom, the mountains gizj with
mijjsty ou the placid plains.
With such scenic attiactions no
wonder the tide of tourist travel sets
strongly towards the West. Easy of
access, with uo wide oceau to cross,
no extortionate rates (or railroa 1 fare
or hotel accommodations, with sceue-
ry uneq-ialed fur variety, beauty and
grandeur, surely the Rick? Moun-
tains out-rival the Alpi, and C dorado
stands superior to Switzerland.
