A young girl, frighted n years of
age, a native of Now York, was
brought up by her parents in all the
gayeties and follies of youth; by them
encouraged to ornament her person
and > oiigago in every frivolous
amusement. Wheu she was taken
ill, three physiciaus were sent for im-
mediately, who prouOuneod her
speedy dissolution. No eoouer was
their opinion made known to her
than she requested, as a favor, that
all her gay companions might bo
gathered with haste. They wero
very booh around her bed, when she
told them hIvu was goiug to die, des-
cribed the awful manner in which
they had spout tboir precious time,
and exhorted theiu all to repentance
before it was too late, in a very af-
fecting manner. She tliau, turning
to her father atid mother, addressed
to them, in the presence of l er ac-
quaintance's, these heart-rending
words: "You havo been the unhap-
py instruments of my being; you
fostered me in pride, and led mo in
the paths of sin; you never once
warned me of my danger, and now
it is too late. In a few hoars you
will have to cover me with earth;
but remember, while you are casting
earth upon my body my soul will be
in hell, amid yourselves the miserable
causo! " Sho soon after expired.
Pktkr (Jaktwkwut—His Service in
the Cause ok Religion.—Peter Cart-
wright, who is serving his fiftieth
year as a presiding elder in the M.
K. Church, writes to the Central
Christian Advocate from Pleasant
Plains, Illinois: "I think it quite
probable that the pood Lord will
givo :ne my discharge from labor as
my jubilee before our Conference at
J.iucaln, and, if so, it is my desire that
this Conference remember my aged
wife, her age eighty next August,
18th day. We were married Au-
gust the 18th, 1808. She has, there-
lore, been the wife ol a traveling
preacher sixty otic years the 1 8th of
next August. We have lived to-
gether sixty-one ye'ars. She has
borne up under all the hardships,
privations and pOVtrty of a traveling
preacher for nearly sixty-one years,
l.t t the old pioneers of the early
days of Methodism say what suffer-
ings the wife of a traveling preacher
must have gone through in that
time, tor although 1 have been a reg-
ular traveling preacher sixty-live
years next full, 1 never received my
disciplinary allowance for support
from the church but three years of
that long traveling; and yet, thank
Clod, I would rattier have the com-
forts I have enjoyed as a piw>r, Buf-
fering, traveling Methodist prencher
than to be President of tho United
States."
True wisdom is to krtew what is
Wist worth knowing, aud to do what
beat worth doing.
