READER'S DIGEST
AWARD
P. J. Dodson. superintendent of
schools, announces that the coveted
Reader's Digest Award for Scholastic
Achievement has been won by Miss
Doris Louise Veselka and Miss Alma
Lee Reid, of this city, valedictorians
of the class of 1!W9, The Bastrop High
School.
They will receive an engrossed par-
chment certificate upon graduation.
The Reader's Digest confers this an-
nual awa d as encouragement to young
men and women throughout the na-
tion who. by their scholastic achieve-
ment, give promise of growing into
leadeishiji in their communities.
Principals of jirogressive prepara-
tory and high schools increasingly
advocate an interest among s*udent*
in the most significant articles which
appear in current magazines. Their
b< lief is that vital contact with the
living, quickening thought of our day
is essential to education, both before
and after graduation. As one princi-
pal expressed this thought in a let-
ter to The Reader's Digest. "Your
aw aid and your magazine appeal to
me as a way to keej> our best stu-
dents in the mental vanguard through
the difficult transition from school
to society at large."
Our own local educators are among
the progressives of the nation who
use this method of relating text ma-
teria! in magazines to current mo-
dern life. It i> their broad-minded
foresight which has made it possible
foi our student^ to compete for The*
Reader'.- Digest Award.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR
f>F THE FIRST BAPTIST
CHI RCH
Well, things seem to be warming up
since it was announced that a revival
is coming to town. It is quite in-
teresting to sit on the sidelines and
watch the fellows kick. Then it is
quite- encouraging to turn your other
ear around and hear the Boosters
cheer. I believe I had rather be a
Booster than a Rooster.
Somebody wanted to know* why we
are going to use a Tent for our re-
vival this summer. There are two
leasons: (1) There is not a church
building in town that is large enough
f^r a meeting of any considerable size,
and we are expecting great crowds;
(2) Say what you will, there are cer-
tain elements in any city's population
which will not go so readily into a
chuivh as into some other place. Ami
what we want this year is to reach
the people for Christ.
It will be necessary to have somo
organization. To attempt to care for
an undertaking of this kind without
the most systematic and thorough
organization is like a general saying
to his soldie-.-, "Come on. Boys," and
going out to war in just any old way.
It is like a contractor trying to
throw uj> a modem sky-scraper with-
out any plans in his head, or blue-
print in his hand. It is like a pugilist
trying to strike a blow with his fin-
gers spread, instead of organizing
them into a fist and doing the thing
in the proper way.
Our purjx>se will be to enlist as
great number of workers from all
of the churches which will co-oper-
ate, as it is possible to secure. This
is one time we must ha\*e a solid
front to win a victory against Sin and
the Devil. Just think of more than
150 men and women and l*>ys and
girls in this community who ar*
LOST, without God, and without any
hope—doomed to spend an eternity
in Htdl with the Devil and his an-
gels. How it should stir our very soul.
How it should incite us to action!
The revival spirit continues with
us in the First Baptist Church. Last
Sunday we had another to join the
church. Others were in the evening
audience, as well as in the morning
audience, who were unsaved. They
were m. ved. They are nothing. It
seems as if we are on the verge of
one of the greatest religious awak-
enings that we have seen around her,-
in this first third of a century.
You are invited to come and In*
with u-. Salvation by tin- blood of
Christ is the keynote of both our
morning and evening service It will
be the theme of out song in Heaven.
