Mr DA DE MAN MINES PEAT MOSS
McDADE, Sept, !4—Mr. A. W.
Joiner (better known a.- Allan) has
a pi".« of land ten miles east of Mc-
Dade on which is located a peat b/'ig.
Is talking with Mr. Joiner about this
bog—he -ays that he, with two la .
orers are mining several tons per
day <15 tin* when dry will make
tons —he showed rn * samples—the
| top i- a pale green color (a growing
| mo? si which will hold thirty times its
weight in moisture, that, which comcs
immediat<dy und-r this from about
two feet in fine granulated moss of
a brown color—the next is from about
two feet on is a dark brown humified
pea* moss and this peat which wh n
mined lo-es four fifths of it- mois-
ture
This trjg consists of several acres,
ana several years ago one side of the
bog caught fire and burned for s v-
eral years with a loss of an acre or
more. Mr. Joiner has mined it fir
eight feet and still going go.<d-—he
is going into this on a commercial
basis, r.a1- installed a shredder and
will continue to install the needed ma-
chinery as it is possible, he thinks
that by winter he will be able to sun-
ply the demand. He is selling to all
the larger nurseries and florists in
Houston and Austin. We have seen
some hydrangeas grown with an ad-
dition of this peat m«tn. th-y are
much larger, more vigorous and the
coloring deeper and more brilliant.
Mr. Joiner hai- had it analyzed and
is Utter for acid growing plants.
We plan to go out and spend the
day with him and get a first hand
look of this p*-at bog—it i* a won-
derful discovery for t hi- country—!t
is very interesting to talk with Mr.
•fairer. I asked him how he came t.i
loc >te it—it was very amusing and
ink resting to hear this, of which 1*1!
write a long description after going
out and looking it over.
