Although the town of Bastrop, as many other
I rxas towns whose holiday observance this year was
set by football schedules rather than the President's
proclamation, is celebrating today as Thanksgiving
Day, we nught have done well to have set aside both
days, for Ih year, more than ever before, we have
much for which to br thankful
VI e have only to read our daily papers and lis
ten to our radio*, to make us feel the chaos that sur-
rounds our nation, and to bring the spirit of thanks-
giving welling up into our hearts.
There is no need to go into detail again as to
what we, as American citizens, have to be thankful
for. But as we sit about our festive tables today,
let us think again what we, as Bastrop citizens, are
privileged to enjoy. For the necessities of life, with
which most of us are comfortably supplied; for the
smiles of friendly faces; for civic organizations that
are building continually toward a better town; for
our churches and schools; for the beautiful State
Park that is ours; for the progressive steps our city
has made in the past few years.
God has blessed Bastrop. He has been good to
the people here. For these and many other reasons,
we are thankful for the privilege of living in Bastrop.

Bastrop merchants are looking forward to a real holi
day rush. They have filled their stores with attractive
quality merchandise, at reasonable prices, and there are prac-
tically no s|vcial gifts you may be looking for that you
cannot find right here in Bastrop.
Remember, who keeps up the churches and schools and
civic organization- of the town" Who paves the streets and
builds the town? Who pays the salaries of the public of-
ficials and the school teachers? Upon whom do the locai
organizations call for their contributions? Upon whom d>
we call when we are in trouble and need help? The mail
order house? Or the city merchants?
No! Bastrop merchant* keep us and our town. They
pay the bills that keep our town and churches and schools
going. They pay the public salaries. They make the con-
tributions. They are always ready to help us when we need
help. I t's a' least giw them a fair chance! Let's let them
know that we appreciate what they are doing for Bastrop,
l et's give them a !>ig part of our Christmas shopping money

back to benefit us; what we spend out of town is gone.
