BASTROP ADVERTISER. THURSDAY. MARCH 2a, l'-M.'S
BACK TO THE BIBLE
By T.vangelist Alva K. Phillips
AUSTIN, TEXAS
THE GREAT EVENT
Chiseled into the walls of our beautiful congressional library in Wash-
ington, L>. C., are the wise sayings of illustrious men. The closing lines of
■one of these reads as follows, "one treat, far-off event toward which the
whole world moves." It is this event, the greatest of all happenings con-
nected with human experience, to which we shall direct your attention to-
day. In the prophecy of I>an. :14 it is. the setting up of a universal
kingdom which shall never be destroyed. In the prophecy of Matt. 24:14,
it is spoken of as "the end of the world." It is the second coming of
Jesus, when as the Apostle John tells us, He shall return a.- "King of
Kin^s, and Lord of Lords." Rev. Ill: It). This is to be the climacteric
event. of the ages.
ITS CERTAINTY
Before the Saviour went away, at the close of His earthly ministry,
He gave the promise, "If I go away, I will come again." John 14:1-3-
This promise is just as certain of fulfillment as though it had been spoken
but yesterday. In this respect the Apostle Peter 11* 11 - u-. "one day is with
the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." II Peter
3:8, 9. God never forgets; He always keeps faith with His people.
We have the word of angels that Jesus will come again. As with up-
lifted heads the disciples were witnessing the ascension of our Lord into
the clouds above them, two angels suddenly appeared, who standing by
their side assured them, saying, "This same Jesus who is taken up from
you into heaven shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into
heaven." Actsl : 10, 11. Both prophets and apostles have again and
again spoken confidently of Christ's second coming, being in fact the most
frequently mentioned doctrine of the Bible. It has been "the blessed
hope" to the righteous of every generation. This event, nice far off, is
now near at hand.
THE PURPOSE
But why is Jesus coming again? To receive the righteous unto Him-
•elf, is the clear statement He made as to His purpose. John 14- 2, 3.
Paul assures us that when "the Lord Himself snail descend from heaven
with a shout, with the voice of the ai harigel, and with the trump of God,'
that the righteous dead will then rise fro.n their graves, while the right-
eous living will be caught up with them to meet the Lord in the air. after
which they will evermore be with Him. I Thess. 4 :1. 17. Then too, as we
are further told in 1 Cor. 15: ">1-54. the saints will be changed in a moment
of time from this mortal state to an immortal condition. It is then that
the covering of light and glory which departed from man when he sinned
in Eden will be restored so that every redeemed person will "be like Him,"
aad be able to see Jesus in all His glory. 1 John .'5: 2. It is then that
the saints will be taken to heaven to live in those mansions that He went
•awav to prepare for them.
HOW HE COMES
The Scriptures have much to say concerning the manner of Christ's
coming. "As the lightning corneth out of the east and shincth even unto
the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be." Matt. 24 27
"Then shall all tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall ee the Son of
Man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great g'ory." verse
30. "When the Son of Man shall come in His glory, and all the holy
angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of Hi glory " Matt.
25: 31. Notice this text declares that ALL the angels come with Him.
the number of whom is declared to be "ten thousand times ten thousand
and thousards of thousands." Rev. 5:11. And they have a definite part
to act in connection with Christ's coming. Says the Scripture, "And He
.shail send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gath-
er together His elect, from one end of heaven to the other." or from every
place under heaven. Matt. 21:31. Truly we may smg. What a gathering
that will be!
The "Secret Rapture" theory has no place in Bible teaching, fur when
our Saviour appears the second time, "every ey shall see Him." Rev. 1 : 7.
THE RESULT
We have shown that to the righteous the coming of Jesus means
either resurrection or translation, a < hange from mortality to immortality,
a reunion with saints and loved on«s, a home with the Saviour in Hi*
heavenly kingdom. How different the fact of the sinful and ungodly.
John the Kevelator ha.s pictures the terror that will fill the hearts of the
wicked when the Saviour appears. "And the king- of the earth, and the
gn at men, and the rich men, and the chief captains . . . hid themselves in
the dens and in the rocks of the mountains. And said to the mountains
and rocks, fall on us, and hide u- from the face of Him that sitteth upon
the throne. For the great day of Hi1 wrath is come, and who shall he able
to stand?" Rev. <>: 15-17.
Paul declares, "The Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven w-ith
Hi' mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know
not God and that obey not the gospel." II The -. 1: 7. H. He further
tells us in chapter 2, verse 8, that tht wicked will then "be consumed by
tin' ipirit of Hi- mouth, and shall be destroyed by the brightne-s of His
Coming." Thus, when J.-- - ■ c-. >• again, all the righteous will be taken to
heaven, and all the wicked II be slain l<\ the bnghtne- of His glory
No one would thu- be left living ipon 'hi- earth. Of the condition that
would prevail on earth iimcdiately following t'hri-t's coming, the proonet
Jeremiah wrote its follows: "I beheld the earth and lo it was without
form and void; and the heavens and they had no light .... I beheld and
lo there was no man .... I beheld and fo the fruitful place wa a wilder
ws , and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the
Lord arid by His fierce anger. For thus hath the Lord said, the whole
kind -diall be desolate, yet will I not make a full end." Jer I 2.'!-27. No
wond«r tin event is -.poken of in the Scripture n the "end 'if the world,"
for only the Devil will be left alive in this earth for the period of ono
thousand years thereafter. Thi« i the great event which will bind Satan
and force upon him an unwanted vacat on a "t forth in Revelation 20
Yea. Jesus is coming again in power and glory. All who live upon
the earth will see Him. He will bring deliverance and salvation to the
righteous, but anguish and death to the wicked, lie will completely wreck
the kingdom of Satan, arid iind him amid the ruin theieof. And the day
i* fast approaching. Will you be seeking a hiding place in that momentous
hour, or will you be aide to look up and jo;, fully ay, "Th i the Lord,
I will be glad and rejoice ir. His ilvation." I i. 25: 9.
