SERVICES RENDERED BASTROP PEOPLE
The Bastrop Chamber of Commerce
was commended for the service it is
rendering the citizens of the town
and the newcomers at the regular
meeting of that organization held
Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock, in
the Chamber of Commetce office.
The Chamber of Commerce and its
efficient secretaries have made spe-
cial efforts to accommodate strangers
looking for rooms, or seeking infor.
mation about the town or the camp,
and they spend many hours each day
filling out the many and varied gov-
ernment forms for individuals who
need help on them. Especially was the
appreciation of the Bastrop County
Draft Board expressed by R P. Per-
kins, who stated that their help in
filling out registrants affidavits had
been invaluable both to the men and
the board.
The Chamber of Commerce also
has on file the latest information re-
lative to the rapidly.changing tax
laws, s<> that merchants or other in-
dividuals seeking information on the
subject, may consult that file at any
time.
Postmaster E. F. Pearcy announced
the Third War Fund Drive, stating
that, since Bastrop had never failed
to go over the top on a quota, he was
sure the town would respond as us-
ual to this c."ll.
Mayor Will Rogers discussed the
prospective projects for the town
which will include rebuilding the city
litjeets, constructing sidewalks and
curbing. He also called attention to
the fact that the city is making every
effort to arrange for a continuation
of the garbage pick-up, and hoped to
have definite plans completed in a
short while.
Earl L. Corson, directo rof the USO
told of the increased activities of the
USO, including the large increase in
the number of service men who are
taking advantage of the facilities of-
fered them there. He also announced
•hat the new building, nearing com-
pletion on the southeast corner of the
court house lawn, will be ready for
occupancy sometime tnis month.
Mr. Wolf, new manager of the
Western Union, became a member of
the Chamber of Commerce at this
meeting.
Dr. J, froidon Bryson, president,
presided over the meeting.
