LENDING LIBRARY
WERS VARIETY
OF READING
More readers of fiction, non-
fiction, Westerns and murder
mysteries are wanted to patronize
the lending library at the Bastrop
Chamber of Commerce office.
Many patrons are daily checking
out books but many more are
needed to make the library suc-
cessful, according to C. W. Eskew,
Chamber president. The books were
placed in the Chamber office, Mr.
Eskew .said, in an effort to fill
a vacuum created hert when the
last vestiges of a library of an
earlier day were wiped out by
Gamble Lodge No. 241 A.F. & A.M.

disinterest. It was the thought
of the members of the Board of
Directors of the Chamber to place
good books at the disposal of
citizens so that culture of this
sort could be perpetuated.
"You do not have to be a
member of the Chamber of Com-
merce," Mr. Esktw said, "in order
to check out books from the lib-
rary. There is a slight charge —
10 cents for three days and three
cents a day for each day there-
after — to citizens interested in
patronizing the Chamber's library.'
Among the books at the library
art the following: The Prince of
Foxes, Mrs. Mike, Benjamin Blake,
The Left Hand Is the Dreamer,
The Hucksters, The Foxes of
Harrow and The Vixens, Britannia
Mews, Singing Waters, This Side
of Innocence. Spoonhandle, David
The King, The Bi;r Sky, Captain

?rhe River Road, Simone, The

SWIMMING
By Jewel Gibson
At the 4-H camp in Beeville
the 4-H'ers went swimming in
groups. Everybody went swimming
from (>:00 to 7:00 in the morning
and again during the day. They
had a lifeguard to watch the child-
ren. Everybody had a partner and
when the whistle blew the partners
had to hold hands.

and Fayette Counties; however,
only the veterans from Bastrop
County members are published

My most outstanding improve-
ment on mv farm ha- b en in-
creasing my capital goods. I pur-
chased a John Deere Tractor and
found it to he much more economi-
cal than farming with mules and
horses.
For the first time in my life
I applied 500 pounds of commer-
cial fertilizer on my cropland and
the result has been amazing.
CHARLES KELLOUGH
Roi'te 1, Rox 57
Bastrop, Texas
was able to have ripe watermelons
by June 5th of this year. At the
present time, there are melons in
my patch that weigh approximate-
ly fifty pounds as of June 15th.
The saw dust was used as a
source of organic matter to hold
the commercial fertilizer after it
had gone into solution. When the
drought came, my melons did not
suffer for moisture and plant
food.
LORENZO WYATT

Bastrop, Texas.
With the assistance of the class
and our instructor, William A.
Gordon, 1 built an oil lamp brooder
for my baby chicks and to date
11 have not lost a chick. In the fu-
ture, 1 am never going to try
raising chicks the old way. This
brooder has attracted much at-
tention in my community.
At the present date, I have
painted most of my farm equip-
ment and it adds much to the
appearance of the farm in gen-
eral.
ONZELO CARR
Route 2, Box 48
Smithville, Texas
In March of this pear 1 con-
structed a four room house on my
farm. With this increase in capi-
ta! goods, I have found out that
with more space in the home, there
are more conveniences and life
seems to be happier on the farm.
With the instruction received in
the class, I flat broke all of my
cropland last year so it would
have a chance to catch more rain-
fall and store moisture up for
the dry seasons. My crops have
suffered very little from the
drofight this year.
D. C. BROWN
Route 1, Box 157
Bastrop, Texas.
Since the organization of the
Rastrop County Vocational School
for colored veterans on October 7,
1!*47, I have learned many new
improved practices in farming.
Thi- year is the first time that
I have ever used commercial fer-
tilizer on my farm. With an ap-
plication of M00 pounds of com-
mercial fertilizer to my garden,
there has been a marked improve-
ment in the production of vege-
tables. I will never plant any mnie
crops without first applying com-
mercial fertilizer.
ALCIE C. PETERSON
Rastrop, Texas.
My farm crops have been sun-
plied with 2230 pounds of com-
mercial fertilizer and are holding
on well through this drought sea-
son.
I also constructed a manure-
heated hot-bed and bedded out
eleven bushels of chemically
treated sweet potatoes this year.
Another improvement made on
my farm was the establishing of
approximately one acre orchard.
L. R. EVANS
Elgin, Texas
When 1 enrolled in the Veter-
ans School on October 7, 1047, my
pasture was washing, but with
the gaining of new experience in
the Vocational Class, I have been
able to build check dams to stop
the rate of flow of water in the
pasture.
I haw .-d money by carrying

W. JONES
Utley, Texas.
1 applied two tons of well-rotted
saw dust on one acre of land and
applied 200 pounds of commercial
fertilizer. To my amazement, I
This year 1 applied commercial
fertilizer n my garden and had
good results. In the future I am
going o go "all out" for barn-
yard manure and commercial fer-
tilizer.
My home has been wired ami
life is much happier on the farm
with the manv conveniences.
