OBSERVATIONS
C',W. Y srri SHADY
We are a little sad tonight.
We .should be glad. We are -ad
because we are about to lose a
dear' oldster that we will always
remember with happy reflections.
Under ordinary conditions, we
■i welcome old Long Whiskers, with
; his crooked handle slicer and the
hour glass jewelry* about thin
time each year. Yes, ordinarily,
; we are anxious to see old Past-
j trouble fade out into history and
welcome little plump New Year
with hope and expectation. It isn't
exactly that way this time. For
while we have seen a lot of old
years leave and n lot of new years
come, this is one old year that,
as avid as we are, we could not
ask for any one year to bring us
more than old '49 did.
No doubt we, that is, Old Pete
himself, has had about the best
year of his life these past twelve
months. Just a few weeks ago we
were pouring out our fervant
thanks to our man we pray to,
for a wonderful yield and abund-
—- ant harvest. At this time, after
a little recapping, we are inclined
to get down on our old. stiff
mi nvyinrn T7 knees and gratefully
IVUJVlr)hJ\ 44 thank our creator and caretaker
for the abundance of wealth we
possess. Fact is, we a,e richer
than Glen McCarthy, Jessie Jones,
Murray Hughes and Ed Cullen all
put together. (.Note the change
from Rockefeller, Mellon, Morgan
and company. That is because those
old cheap skates didn't come to
Texas (Houston) and make some
real money!)
Yes, folks, we feel perfectly
well. We haven't a pain or an
ache. We eat three meals each
day and enjoy them. Still better,
we digest them. We sleep all the
sieep that we need or want. We
are not shortening our life by-
hating anybody. We are making
our life a happy thing, by loving
a lot of folks. And we are be-
lieving that they love us, too. We
are living in the best town upon
the face of this old earth, full of
the best people alive. Up to now
we haven't spent a cent and be-
lieve us to be sincere, when we
-ay we would not be deprived of
anyone of the above assets for
nnv number of millions in dollars.
Now these things caused us to
do a little prespiring at times
and some thinking, but not enough
of either to hurt us. in the first
place nature, if you are a little
stiff, God to us, sorted out the
elements this past year so that
they jerked about everything out
of this old dirt that any one could
c-xpect. Of course, the dirt had to
1h> stirred a little now and then.
So very naturally, we have the
material to satisfy that good ap-
petite we have. By the grace and
wisdom of a good democratic gov-
ernment, we have been paid a
good wage for our toil.
We have a good bed to do that
peaceful sleeping in. It is cooled
by a government financed power
in the summer, and made warm
and cozy in the winter by the
same. We can walk down the
streets of our home town (per-
