BEARS WIN DISTRICT 36B CHAMP TITLE
BI-DISTRICT TILT TO BE PLAYED DEC. 7
A battling Bastrop team used again started moving. Harris hit
an aerial attack to snatch the
District 30B championship and a
12-«i victory from the Smithville
Tigers here Friday night after
trailing <>-0 at halftime.
This is the first time the Hears
have won this title since l! 44.
Bastrop will nveei Columbus,
District 35-B champion, in a bi-
district game on December 7, at
8 p. m. in Columbus.
Favored Smithville used its run-
ning attack to march 45 yards
in nine play.- for a -econd quarter
touchdown just before the half
ended. Kdward Kellar scored for
the Tigers on a 3-yard bla.->t off
left guard after setting up the
score with runs of 13, 11 and <">
yards. Raymond Rapp's try for
the extra point wa.- no good.
The Tigers had an ««dge in near-
ly all statistic.- at the halfway
mark while Bastrop had trouble
getting its ground game started.
However, as soon as the second
half got under way the Bears
opened up with passes in an effort
to move downfield. B. J. Wolf
started hitting his targets and
bark A. D. Harris tossed a few on
plays crossing up the Smithville
defenders.
Bastrop recovered a T'ger fum-
ble on the Smith 43-yard line and
Turner on a play good for 22
yards and a first down on the
Smithville 38. Turner broke loose
on a reverse good for IS* yards.
After two plays yielded five yards,
Wolf faded back and hit Harris
who wa.-> all alone on the five
yard line. Harris wa.". untouched
a- he hustled the few remaining j
yards to score. His try for extra '
point again was no good.
Bastrop completed five of ten,
passes and all five payed off.
Smithville's running game was
during most of the second half.
Kellar'* fine running game and
outstanding defensive play made
him one of the game's best per-
former- Turner turned in an
equally impressive game for Bas-
trop on both offense and defense.
Smithville rolled up 150 yard*
ru-hing compared to Bastrop's 83
yards but the Bears were able to
net another !>f yards passing while
Smithville got only two yards on
its one completed pass in ten tries.
The game was characterized by
its rugged, aggressive play on the
part of both teams.
For Smithville, Quarterback
Rapp was one of the standouts
while Ray Right mer and Jerry
Fleming turned in fine line games.
Fred Fiebrich, Carl Kelly, and
