REAY SYSTEM TO
BRING TV HOOKUP
TO SAN ANTONIO
The Dana—Austin microwave
radio relay system under con-
struction on an advanced schedule
by the Southwestern Hell Tel -
phone Company, to link up with
the existing Aunt in-San Xntoni.-
chain radio relay towers and brin^
network television program* to
San Antonio TV stations in July,
is Hearing completion,
W. Davis, Austin district
manager for the company, an-
nounced today that the major po-
tior of the wqrk on the seven tem-
porary towers between this city
and Kalia.- has been completed.
"Towers art* in place at Mid-
lothian and Hillsboro, and are
.earing completion at Waco,
Moody. Florence and I'fluirerville
Telephone control cilcuits and
power lines have been built in
to each tower site. In the next
few days, transmitting and re-
ceiving antennas will be placed a-
top each of the towers," Davis
said
The towers of the telephone
company's microwave system arc
spaced about .'Ut miles apart be-
tween Austin and Dallas, with
the transmitting antenna at each
tower aligned with the receiving
antenna of the next one in the
chain. Coming into Austin for
reiay to San Antonio, the last
jump in the northern leg of the
route will carry the microwave
beam from the tower at Pfluger-
ville to the antenna atop Austin's
radio relay tower on West 10th
Street.
"Contract# have been signed be-
tween the Bell system and the
major network television broad-
casters for the transmission of
network TV programs to Texas
and Oklahoma in time for the
National Political Conventions
thi- July. We are racing against
time on the job of providing TV
Channels to television broadcast j
ing stations affiliated with thsee
major networks," Davis explain-
ed.
"The only way this job could
be done in time for the network-.
to televise the convention pro- |
feedings from Chicago as tney
happen was to provide a complete
radio relay system on a temper
ary basis. It's
when it's considered that not onlv
San Antonio, but also Tulsa, Ok-
lahoma City, Fort Worth, Dallas
arid Houston will be- linked to the
network under this temporary ar-
rangement.
"The program# will be trans-
mitted via coaxial cable from Thi-
cajio to St. Louis, Memphis, and
on to Jackson, Miss., where they
will be relayed over a connecting
coaxial cable to Dallas-. From
Dallas the programs will be re-
layed by means of microwave ra-
dio relay to the two points in Ok-
lahoma. to Fort Worth, and San
Antonio. Houston will be served
via a coaxial cable which ya^
installed last fall. Now in op-
eration for long distance mes-
sage-. several tubes in this cable
are available for transmission of
TV Programs."

completed from Austin to San

such as the Austin installation
on West 10th. These large per-

temporary ones now going tt|
Pflugerville and the other inter-

'Microwaves are uper-high-

of light. Their wave-length is

long as a cigarette- - - and four

within actual sight of the tower
