REA Work
Rural electrification is a
movement resting primarily upon
the initiative and integrity of
farm consumers of electricity, i
declares U. S. Senator Lyndon i
B. Johnson, in an article publish i
ed in the November is.-ue of
Progressive Farmer.
Since the Rural Electrification
Administration wa- established i
in 193«', four million consumers I
have been connected to REA I
Financed lines, the article re-
ports.
"In the Southern States," John-
son writes, "the number of farm
homes receiving electric power I
has jumped from 3.3 per cent to j
more than S3 per cent of the j
total. In the country a- a whole, i
more than 85 per cent of all I
farms are electrified. Nearly
300,000 farm families in Tex
a are receiving electricity
through farm cooperatives."
REA cooperatives art more
than $50,(1011,000 ahead of sche-
dule in repaying the $2,700,000,-
000 lent them to build trail .-mis
ion networks and to buy power
from private utilities and Fer
era I h.vro electric projects, ac-
cording to the Progressive Far
met article. Delinquencies a
mount to only one-fifth of one
per cent of the amount due.
Declaring that REA is neith-
er a political issue nor "anti |
private power" in it- concept,
the Texas Senior Senator hails |
its program as "a heartening j
example of th< Government help- j
ing people to help them -elves." j

farming both easier and more
productive, Johnson asserts in
his article, continuing:
"The future of REA is a mat
ter of concern to ail of us who
have witnessed and participated
in its development. The limits
of rural progress in rural elec-
trification have not been reach-
ed. More than 1(5 per cent of the
Souch's farms are still without
electric service. Modernisation
of facilities is far from complete.

up* to take care of increasing
farm use of electricity."
The article points out the im-
portance of maintaining the au
thority of REA co-ops to build
their own generation and trans-
mission facilities. Weakening
of this authority, Johnson warns,
would simultaneously increase
the need for loans and lesson
the co-operatives' ability to main-
tain their repayment record.
