I thought that the citizen.- of
Ha-trop may be interested in
knowing just what happened at
the special call meeting of the
City Council on March 2;<, 11)61,
.since we do have several things
of interest outlined for the next
yea i.
Some representatives from
Marvin Turner Engineers were
down to talk to us about the
program for new sewer, and fire
protection program which we
have set up. It i- the genera'
opinion of this firm that some
government grants may be avai-
lable in the near future to be
added to the amount- which the
City will spend, and in this
way the people will get more
foi the amount thr.t the City
spend
Von will remember that when
the City put in the sewn and
water lines, the (iovernment
gav. the City a grant of
$ I Oli.CMKhOO to do this work.
Our present plan i- to replace
vv atei line- North of the Rail-
toad track with <"■" and 8"
lines, which will greatly b efit
our customers and will give us
a big saving in oui insurance
rate We also have m mind
to extend sewer line- in that
area and to install fire hydrants.
Our streets are badly m need
of attention, and we have plans
which we are trying to work
out on that.
The City of Ha.strop i- also
in need of more law enforce-

tin Vmeiican Cancel Society
i held at Hast rop Chamber of
Commerce on Monday night, now
ment. Continuously rising costs,
and the expenses of additional
bligations placed upon the
County, has repeatedly drained
the General Eund, Salary Eund
and Jury Fund.
Several years ago the Com
mi. sioners' Court relinquished 5c
of its then :>5c allocation from
ad valorem taxes, transferring
such 5c from the Road and
B'i idge Eund to other funds, but
this transfer, though reducing
the Road and Bridge Eund. has
not been sufficent to meet the
present day needs. The proposed
tax. if adopted, though ear mark-
ed for Farm to Market and
Lateral Road.- in the County, will
iriiabl. the Commissioners' Court
to divert a part of the ad valor-
em tax now allocated to the
City Cancer Road and Bridge Fund and add
will appear same to the more depleted funds
p r o g r a m of the County.
Wednesday, There are two methods where-
by the funds might be raised.
First: Voting an additional tax
of 20c on a $100.00 valuation, by
the p r o p e r t y owners in the
county, undei the plan set out
in Article 7048a. Revised Civil
Statutes. Second: Raising the as
sessed valuation of properties.
Ity the first method, which is
proposed by the Commissioners'
Court an increa-i in tax rate of
20c on th, S100.00 valuation is

would therefore be necessary to
raise the assessed valuations
equivalent to nearly 40c rate
