ference if the farmer be land-

If the farmer and his tenant
place only a part of the land
in soil bank and farm the rest,
then the owner or landlord must
"materially participate" in the
production of the growing crop,
Marley said.
Farm rental income must also
be included a.- self-employment
income if the owner or landlord
"materially participates" in the
production of a growing crop.

A Citizen's
Obligation:
Jury Duty
Nobody want? to lose money.
Yet this i> happening every day,
according to James R. Marley,
manager of the Austin district
social security office.
This is true because many
people who are 62 or older do
not seem to know that they do
not have to quit work complete-
ly to get all or some of their
social security bent-fits during
! the year.
Under the ,-ocial security law,
if you are eligible for retire-
ment benefits, you can earn up
to $1200 a year and get a be-
nefit check for all 12 months in
the year. If you make more than
i $1200, you will still teceive a
. i check for any month in which
j you do not earn more than $100
or do not render substantial
i services in self-employment.
In addition, even if you earn
more than $1200 a year and
! work all months in the year,
you may still jret some bene-
, fit check.- during the year. For
learnings over $1200 and up to
$1700, benefits are withheld on
the basis of $1 in benefit.- for
each $2.00 earned. On earnings
over $1700, $! in benefits is
withheld for each $1 earned.
Therefore, the benefits a per-
j son or family can actually re-
ceive when the person earns
more than $1200 a year depends
on both hi.- total wage- and the
total amount of benefit- due.
Mr. Marley invited working
persons of retirement a^e to
visit, or call or write his office
for more information. The office
is located at 1107 Guadalupe,
and the telephone number is
GR 7 «777.

Jury duty i- an experience
I everybody ought to have.
In a criminal case twelve jur
ors have a duty to do a justice
as each one sees it, and yet be
I unanimous. In most trials both
sides have much to say, and the
evidence is conflicting. The ap
pointed juror* vary in their abi
: lity, temperament, character, edu
caticn, and their experience in
the world, and in the question
at stake.
Yet a jui\ made up of both
sexes with wide age and edu
cationai differences, jobs and
origins must all come up with
the same verdict. Upon their
verdict much depends the life
oi liberty of others, and the pub-
lic good. So it may take them
'day.- of talking among them-
| selves, all to agree.
Jury duty call- for insight,
! common sense, courage, tact,
| fairmindedno- patience, (espe-
(ially toward the jurors who dis-
. agree with you), good humor,
tolerance, balance, willingness to
| hear others 'jut and change one'-
mind, readiness to go over and
over the facts to find something
I to bring agreement. In short,
jury duty demands a "decent
respect to the opinion" of others
