If you driv. a cur, yo.i proliahly

'parking lot. Bui what nia> !«• a
iiand\ ccnvemcnci- for you may
also lu a happy hunting ground
for the chi- thief. Do you know
your rights in case your car is
stolen ?
By and large, the law divides
parking lots into two basic types.
Let's consider them separately.
TYPE "A" 1/>T
At this lot you pity your fee and
park the car yourself, keeping the
keys. You have a right (exercise
j it! i to lock the car. and you may
drive out withojt handing in any
i ticket.
Legally , this is a kind of quickie
| lease. You are paying for the
temporary use of u parking space,
but not much more Thus, a man
whose car was stolen from a Type
"A" lot tat a ball paiki failed to
collect damages for his loss Un-
der such a parking arrangement,
said the court, a car owner could
hardl> expect the management to
keep a keen lookout for thieves.
In short, the primary responsi-
bility for the car continues to be
vours.
TYPE "B" LOT
At this lot you leave your keys
in the car, so the attendant can
park it for you—and move it a-
round in your absence. Further-
more. you get a ticket which you
are supposed to turn in hen you
leave.
This arrangement is called a
bailment, and its vital element us
the transfer of possession to the
management. With possession goes
I responsibility. Now you are pay
i ing noi onl> for the use of a
| parking span but also for a rea-
sonable amount of supervision and
