Swim Safely and Live
The first weekend of summer in
Texas saw '.'0 pcrsnn.s tilt 111 boating
and drowning accidents, a reminder
that more than IVI Texans die each
year from drowning
"Many, if not most, of those
drownings need nni happen,'' stated
I. S Thompson. M D, nl Dallas,
chairman of the Texas Medical
Association committee on public
health
Dr Thompson nffered the follow-
ing basic safely rules that will help
in avoid a tragic water accident
for your family —
)i l.tarn in swim and to relax
in the water
'.'i Never swim alone
!li Do ikit swim when overly
tired or when the water is extreme-
ly cold.
11 I >n tint overestimate your abil-
ity and endurance.
•ii Swim at protected pools or
beaches under the supervision of a
trained lifeguard.
tii If a lioat overturns, slay with
it antl don'I try lo swim a long
llslallCC in shore
71 Never dive into waters of un-
known depth
Si Tin new activities, such as
watei skiing or SCUBA diving, only
after learning the skills from quail-
lied inslmctorx.
"Many families will tin must of
their swimming llus summer in
private pools. in their own back-
yards or in tlmsc of a friend or
neighbor " Dr Thompson said.
There also are some special pre-
cautions foi private pools —
1 i Make certain Iht pool is kept
I clean and
1 purified.
Felloe the pool and keep Hit

The TMA committee chairman
emphasized thai good manners and
common sense in boating will pre
vent most accidents. "We all know
the rules: IXin't overload the boat
have life preservers for each oc
eupant: don i .stand up or change
scats in a small boat while under
way; keep a watchful eye out for
other boats, swimmers and fisher-
men; iukI give all a comfortably
wide berth. We know the rules,
hut there still are drownings lo -
calise someone ignored them." Dr
Thompson said.
Knowing about artificial respira-
tion and how to apply it could save
a life. 'Die mouth'to-moulh method
is not very difficult, but start im-
mediately, oven in the water: the
victim can survive without oxygen
to the brain for only a few minutes:
with the victim's face up. pull tin
chili forward, make certain the
windpipe is clear; put your mouth
over the victim's mouth, pinch shut
the misc. and blow: repeal I'J or
15 linns (>er minute: keep it up
until medical help arrives
