■News and Comments-
from your COUNTY EXTENSION AGENTS
———T xp Agricultural Extension S«rvic«
A hearty, nutritious diet de-
pends on the foods you select--
not the amount of money spent.
S|n'ud enough to give your
family nutritious, enjoyable
meals. Families with a liberal
food budget a iv more likely to
include foods tliat make up a
good diet. However, man> food
combinations, at various cost
levels, will provide nutrients for
an adequate diet.
I'd help consumers estimate
a reasonable spending plan, U.S.
Department of Agriculture food
economists and nutritionists have
figured costs of three basic food
plans. Buying practices of low.
middle and high income fam-
ilies are reflected in their fig-
ures.
According to the low-cost plan,
weekly food bills for a family
of four add up to $25-$35, de-
pending on children's a&es.
Comparable costs of the mod-
erateplan are $:)0-$45, and for
the liberal plan, $40 and up.
If your weekly food bill is
in line with these figures, you
are spending the same amount
as other families of similar size
and income. And the amount is
sufficient to provide nutritious
meals.
These USDA food plan costs
are only rough guides. The a-
mount you spend may be more
or less, depending on several
factors, such as wliat foods you
select, where you live, and how
carefully you plan and buy. other
considerations include how much
food you prepare yourself,
whether you raise some of your
own food and the importance you
place 011 foixl in relation to other
family needs.

No one food will make you
fat. No one food «ill make you t
thin. And, no one food will make
you beautiful.
But fruit sand vegetables, along
with the other three food groups,
do provide impoitanl nutrients ;
to the diet that help make a U't-
ter-looking you.
If weight control is part of
your health pr.igrain, look again
to fruits and vegetables, l'hej
couple high nutritive value with
low calorie content — certainly
another plus.
As a food group, fruits and
vegetables provide ini|*>rtant
amounts of vitamins ( and A
and iron.
The body cannot store vitamin
C; so it must be eaten every
day. Citrus fruits along with
tomatoes, melons, green pepper,
broccoli, raw greens, raw cab-
bage and potatoes are goixl
sources of vitamin ('.
Vitamin A is found in toma-
toes, deep yellow fruits and veg-
etables, and dark green leafy
vegetables.
In addition, the four members
of the fruit and vegetable group—
spinach, peas, greens, broccoli-
are important sources of iron.
It's recommended you eat four
or more servings of fruits mid
vegetables daily. And that's easy
to do. They fit into every meal
and are also ideal snack foods.
So help yourself to a fruit
or vegetable- -they provide nutri-
ents tliat help to make a better
looking you.
