McDade's Watermelon
Festival Draws Crowd
ELGIN NATIONAL BANK BUYS PRIZE McDADE MELONS The Elgin National Bank
bought the prize long melon which was raised by Junior Goerlitz of McDade for $112.50. It
weighed 53 pounds. The bank also bought the second place melon, raised by Willie
Black well which weighed 44 pounds, it was purchased for $51.00. Pictured are Elgin

Gordon Rosanky To Receive
Year Tenure Pin

Gordon Kosanky, Vocational
Agriculture teacher, Bastrop
High School, will receive his 30
year tenure pin and will be
honored by the Vocational
Agriculture Teachers Associa
tion of Texas in San Antonio,
Texas, July 31, 1973, according
to Sid Long, Gail, President of
the organization.
Rosanky graduated from
Smithville High School and
received his B. S. and M. S.
Degrees in Agriculture Educa
tion from Texas A & M
University.
He served 3'/i years in the
United States Army.
Under Mr. Rosanky's direc-
tion the Bastrop Future
Farmers of America have par-
ticipated in many district, area
and state contests in Leader-
ship and Judging earning their
share of the awards and honors.
The award will be presented
at the Annual Awards Program
of the Association. The pro-
gram is held during the state-
wide conference of Vocational
Agriculture Teachers and the
1973 Conference will emphasize
the implementation of new
approaches to Vocational Agri-
culture Education. Leaders in
agriculture and education from
throughout the state and nation
will participate in the four day
in-service meeting.
Education features of the
meeting will be under the
direction of Mr. J. A. Marshall,
Director of Agriculture Educa-
tion, Texas Education Agency,
Austin. Marshall will be as-
sisted by Mr. G. G. Scroggins,
Assistant Director, Agriculture
Education, Texas Education
Agency; Mr. Billy Conner,
Executive Secretary, Texas

Two pretty queens were
crowned Saturday night. July
14. at McDade's 25th Annual
Watermelon Festival corona
tion. Teenage queen is 17-year
old Debra Kay Cronin, a
graduate of Elgin High School,
and daughter oi Mrs. Ivy
Cronin of McDade. Mitzi Mun
dine, three year old daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Royce Mundine
was crowned tiny tot queen.
Miss Cronin's king for the
festival was Brad Saxon, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Milton Saxon of
Longview. Miss Mundine's tiny
tot king way Troy Page, sor. of
Mr. and Mrs. Danny Page of
Elgin.
1972 Queen Melba Schulz and
King Paul Christensen relin
quished their crowns to the
new king and queen.
Approximately 60 entries
made up the largest parade in
the history of the festival with
the award for the most beauti-
ful float going to the city of
Gonzales. Moulton won the
second best float; Ellinger,
third best float; McDade PTA,
best decorated car; 1972 Tiny
Tot Car Jacqueline Strong,
second best car and must
unusual entry, Bushwackers.
Honorable mention wont to
Yoakum, along with McDade's
appreciation for their great
band, and to the Wolf Farm.
Winners of the watermelon
growing contest w re an-
nounced Saturday night.
The long melon category was
won by Junior Goerlitz of
McDade for his 53-pounder
which was bought by the Elgin
National Bank for $112,50.
Second place went to Willie
Blackwell whose 44-pound mel
on was also purchased by the
bank, for $51.
Delores Wolf took first place
honors in the round melon class
for her 50 pounder that was
purchased by Brackenridge
Auto Supply for $31. Chris
Wolf's 47'/ pound melon
brought $22.50 from the First
National Bank of Giddings.

We are pleased to report that house in L.B.A
Jimmie Burnes is much im-
proved since the emergency
surgery performed on him
about two weeks ago. He is still
in a hospital in Frankfort,
Indiana, but hopes to be able to
return to his grandmother's
house this week. He will spend
a period of recuperating there
before returning to Lake
Bastrop Acres. All of you who
are friends of his keep the cards
and letters rolling along, he is
enjoying receiving them.
Several of the new home
builders were in L.B.A. for the
week end, working and check-
ing on the progress being made
on the houses.
Friends of Mr. and Mrs.
Buford Price are planning an
open house celebration of their
twenty fifth wedding anniver
sary on August 5th, from 2:00
p.m. to 5:00 p.m. All of their
friends are invited to come by
and wish them well. This is to
be at the Price Home in L,ake
Bastrop Acres.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Crawford
have just returned to Houston
after spending a week in L.B.A.
enjoying their new home.

Special guests at the affair
were past teenage and tiny tot
queens. Six of these tiny tot
queens have also been teenage
queens, namely, Margie Lewis
Eschberger, Deborah Wilson
Grimmer, Juanice Hoerman
Thiele, Betty Klemm Pohler,
Jane Mundine Davis and Gale
Nesslbeck Owen. Two teenage
queens have had daughters
who were chosen tiny tot
queens, Hilda Kastner and
Kathy Neidig, Suzanne Field
Hunnicutt and Christi
Crawford. One teenage queen
had a daughter who was chosen
teenage queen, Mrs. Ivy Ann
Kastner Cronin and Debra Kay
Cronin. Upon leaving the stage
the queen* were presented
with a charm with the vear
engraved on it.
The festival wishes to thank
J. K. Reed Music Co. of Austin
for the use of their organ.
An estimated crowd of 4,000
to 5,000 attended the affair.
