BY MRS. ARTHUR GOERTZ
Pareat* Have
Meeting
Two films "Let Ua Be
Concerned For Each Other,"
and 'Take Time To Think",
showing the importance of
listening to others, especially
one's children, were shown as
part of a program, for the
parents of the First Commun-
ion Class for Sacred Heart
Parish, Rockne. Tuesday even
ing. March 25.
Father A1 Palermo, pastor,
was in charge of the films.
Mrs. John Beck, teacher of
Sacred Heart School, and
teacher of the First Communion
Class, in speaking on the
preparation for the reception of
First Holy Communion tor
youngsters, stated it is the
right and responsibility of the
parents to prepare the child for
reception. However, since
many parents feel inadequate
and hesitate to undertake the
preparation by themselves, the
usual precedure is a coopera-
tive effort of the pastor, parent,
and teacher.
The basic requirements for
the reception of First Holy
Communion, she pointed out, is
the child's ability to distinguish
between the Eucharist and
ordinary bread, and that he
know the basic beliefs of his
religion, believing that the
Eucharist is the body and blood
of Christ, the Sacred Meal of
God's People, uniting people to
Christ and to one another in
love.
The child should understand
that the Mass is the Catholic
Way of worshipping, and can be
compared to the family meal,
which involves togetherness,
joys, sense of sharing, and
giving thanks to God for his
goodness.
The Mass, just as family
celebration, centers around a
meal, where the sharing of food
is a basic symbol of friendship,
love and unity, and the prime
manifestation of conrern for
others. Bread is the sign of life,
friendship and unity. Wine is a
sign of joy and unity and is a
basic drink with meals in many
lands.
Just as the Last Supper was
a meal, she stated, the Mass is a
meal drawing the Christian
community together, climaxing
in communion, receiving Jesus
as one's food.
Mrs. Beck pointed out the
children learn through partici-
pation.
Parents present for the
meeting were Mr. and Mrs. Bill
Beck, Mr. and Mrs. Francis
Goertz, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence
Wilhelm, Mrs. Mark Goertz,
Mrs. James Mikus, and Mrs.
Arthur Goertz,
