BLUEBONNET AREA
BY JO MILLER
Our volunteers of the
B.B.V.F.D. have been busy
fighting fires these past («•>*
weeks. Wednesday. September
10th at 11:30 p.m., the
dispatcher called us reporting a
grocery store at ShUoh was on
fire. The Bastrop V.F.D. was
called too, and with their two
trucks and ours, the men kept
the fire from spreading. The
men got in at 2:00 a.m. Our
thanks go to the following:
Leon Miller, John Hoffman,
Paul Ferguson, Forrest Fer
guson and Bill Heard, who
saw the fire from the Hiway
while on his way home from
work.
The landowners of B.B.A.
met Sunday evening, Septem
ber 7th, at the park with
twenty • four in attendance.
After some discussion it was
voted upon to have a fund
raising affair for the benefit of
the park. A planning committee
was nominated to work out the
details. Those serving on this
committee are Mrs. E. Graham,

More about this event at a later
date. On Saturday, September
20th at 9.00 a.m., everyone ts
asked to help in our work day,
which will consist of sanding,
painting and putting up
equipment at the park and a
general cleanup of Bluebonnet
Acres. It seems that some
people enjoy littering and leave
the refuse for others to pickup.
So all you girls add boys come
on out and help us get things
done in our area.
The Black Jack Garden Club
will hold their meeting on
Wednesday, September 24th,
at 7:30 p.m. at Mrs. Jason
Carrington's residence. Our
guest speaker that evening will
be Mrs. Lynn Hall, owner of the

CANCER
Answer
American Cancer Society
line
A faitory worker wants, to
know: "Are unions doing
anything to help workers who
might be exposed to things
that cause cancer?"
ANSWERIine: Scientists are
learning more about possible
industrial cancer hazards
while some aire already
known. The recent dis-
covery of unusual forms of
cancer among chemical plant
employees who were exposed
to vinyl chloride has tailed
additional public attention
to this subject. The Ameri-
can Cancer Society has an
Environmental Cancer Re-
search Project and has often
worked with unions to find
v.ers to potential prob-
lems. There is a long-term
study going on with the
Painters Union, Printers
Union and others to de-
termine the effect of certain
dyes, carbon black and talc,
industry and unions are in-
deed cooperating in other
such studies - for example,
studies of possible health
hazards to asbestos work-
ers - and are changing
manufacturing processes to
reduce ham;.
1 dentist notes: ' 'ANSWER-
Iine would be wise to remind
people that dentists also
help in the fight acainst can-
cer. We are always on the
lookout for any suspicious
changes in the mouth."

as much of a cancer de-

physician's office. There
are several forms of oral
cancer and regular dental
checkups can do more than
just save teeth -- they can
help save lives'
.4k 1:1 Paso woman explains:
"I am a practical kind of
person and 1 want to know
the best way of stopping
cancer."
ANSWERIine: The best way
for you to help yourself is to
understand the vital im-
portance of early diagnosis
and prompt treatment. Your
lpcal American Cancer So-
ciety can help you learn
cancer safeguards and warn-
ing signals but you must act
on them. The way to stop
cancer is through the sup-
port of research. But cancer
research is a slow, very com-
plex and difficult process.
We have made great progress
so far. The talents and
dedication of thousands of
scientists and the support of
the American people will
bring us even closer to our
goal.
An East 1 rxas iivman n rites:
"My husband just retired and
tiihe is kind of hanging on
his hands. He'd like to do
something to help others, but
something important. What
can you suggest?"
ANSWERIine: His talents
and time would be enthusi-
astically welcomed by your
local American Cancer So-
ciety. As an AC'S volunteer,
he might be doing worthwhile
things such as helping
school children learn about
the dangers' of cigarette
smoking, visiting patients or
driving a pattern to u treat-
ment center. He might be
showing films about cancer
safeguards to facton work-
er* ot helping to inform
people about a cancel de-
tection program. Volunteers
are mgentlv needed and
there ate important posts for
young and old alike,
to Chilympiad ... Oi'Fred
McMurray, another Houston
ite. is threatening to bring the
Morman Tabernacle Choir and
the entire Texas Tech March-
ing Band with him, to make him
a shoo • in for the showmanship
award.
Another hopeful makin' the
scene at Chilympiad "75 is Jay
Latson, of Tyler, who's
returning for the third year in a
row to the state competition.
Latson. who's been cookin' chiii
for 30 years, believes that "the
third time's a charm' for his
"plumb, level and square chili."
Another re entry, George
Lovett of Bastrop, claims 33
years of cookin' the spicey
stew, and says he got his start
"In the slush pits of Odessa."
He says his father first got the
recipe for "Undertaker's Chili"
from a mercury miner at
Lijfitas. "back when only 17
people knew Ligitas was, and
only eight had ever been
there."
But Jake Schuelke, of Hondo,
the reigning state menudo
cooker, says his stew's got
"plenty of heritage," too! (Ever
eat heritage?)
Now, it's hard to know when
to believe these chili cooks:
John Petty, of New Braunfels,
is featurin' "Outhouse Chili,"
and says he's been an expert for
150 years! And an entry from
San Marcos, Calif, (that's right,
they're comin' in from as far as
California) claims he was
"weaned on chili."
On the local scene, San
Marcos (TEXAS) plumber
G"ne Funk is bringing some
"plumber's chili." According to

fine with the taste, but we're

And local building inspector
Jack Majors promises heavenly
taste from his "One Way Chili".
He also promises that it's the
Oldest receipe in existence •
"It's true," Majors said, "It says
in Genesis, chapter 25, verse
30, 'And Esau said to Jacob,
"Give me a bowl of red." '"
"Redneck chili?" There's two
entries. Chili cooks call cattle
"chili-on-th-hoof," some say
their chili's "so hot we eat it
raw," and others say they've
been cookin chili "long enouth
