Make Annual Winter Tours
Mrs. LaVaughn Young
Dies November 25
Mrs. LaVaughn Young, who
was a freshman at McMurry last
year, was accidently killed in her
home on Nov, 25.
Mrs. Young was the daughter
of J. D. Gaines, a caretaker at the
college. She was loved by all the
students who knew her.

Leaving the campus Tuesday,
Dec. 13, to attend the first Stu-
dent Conference on National Af-
fairs at Texas A & M College were
Gene Bonny, president of the Mc-
Murry Student Association, and
Alton Kite. Kite and Bonny, both
seniors, were appointed official
delegates by Dr. Joe Humphrey,
academic dean, upon recommen-
dation of the Student Association.
The conference was set for Dec.
14-17.
Kiva and Ko Sari, men's social
clubs, held Christmas parties Sat-
urday, Dec. 3. Kiva members and
guests met at the Abilene Garden
Club; Ko Sari's social was held
at Madge B u t n a m Methodist
Camp near Merkel.
McMurry's debate team was
represented in a chapel program
on Dec. 6 featuring a "Lincoln-
Douglas" type debate between
Don Reavis and Don Hunt on the
subject of guaranteed annual
wage. William K. Clark, speech
professor, introduced the debate.
Circle K and Wah Wahtaysee,
campus service clubs, were busy
on Dec. 11 and 12, working on
final plans and decorations for
the annual President's Christmas
party held Tuesday night.
An all-college carroling party
for McMurrians was sponsored by
Delta Beta Epsilon girls' social
club Dec. 15. Another carolling
party was held by the McMurry
Chanters on Dec. 12.
The annual Christmas concert
of the McMurry Indian Band, es-
pecially for children of McMurry
faculty members and married
students, was given Dec. 15 in
the regular student assembly.

Chanters was held in another stu-

Indian Band made their annual
winter tours this month.
The Chanters left Sunday, Dec.
4, accompanied by their director,
Dr. Richard C. von Ende.
The group sang in Winters, Bal-
linger, Paint Rock, Brady, Mason,
San Saba, Goldthwaite, Comman-
che, De Leon, Ranger, and East-
land. They returned Wednesday
after the Eastland performance.
Appearing with the Chanters
were soloists Jo Tooley, Natalee
Morris, Kenneth Mills, Melvin
Pollock, and Uel Crosby.
The Indianaires, composed of
Mills, Pollock, Bill Vaughan, and
Dale Stiles, and the girls' sextet,
consisting of Clarice Douglas, Bet-
ty Shewbert, Elva Lou Dunklin,
Nevelyn Crawford, Anita Mash-
burn, and Nancy Crawford, also
performed. The sextet was ac-
companied by Gene Davidson.
The band, under the direction
of Prof. Raymond T. Bynum, be-
gan its tour Sunday, Dec. 11, with
programs in Hamlin, Spur, Mata-
dor, Lockney, Abernathy, Little-
field, Levelland, Lamesa, and
Snyder.
Soloists for the tour were Stella
Bergen, Audrey Carver, Dorothy
King, Bob Newman, Don Davis,
and others.
Thursday morning, Dec. 15, the
band presented its annual faculty-
student Christmas party under
the auspices of the Student Asso-
ciation.
Highlighting the affair were
songs and reading presented by
children of McMurry faculty
members and the appearance of
Santa Claus.

boy, Michael Russell, 3%.
Richard Sell, 1950-'54, is a 2nd
Lieutenant in the Marines. He is
a pilot at the marine base in Ken-
cola Bay, Hawaiian Islands.
Myra Lou Cooke, a graduate
of 1951, and daughter of the Presi-
dent of the College, was married
December 12 to Kenneth W. Gue-
bert. They are living now in Lake
Jackson, Texas. Myra worked as
Secretary to the Executive Vice
President after her graduation
until last spring, when she took
a position with the Dow Chemi-
cal Company in Freeport.
The Reverend Lynward Harri-
son, who attended McMurry in
1949-51, is now touring the Holy
Land. This trip is being made pos-
sible by one of the members of
his church, Wesley Chapel Meth-
odist Church, near Vernon.
Melba Rucker and Barbara Jo-
chetz, class of '55, are teaching
in Lubbock. Melba teaches fourth
grade and music and Barbara,
who rooms with her, teaches third
grade in another elementary
school. Their address is 3205-D
35th Street.
Bill Shaw, class of 1947, is in
the dental profession at Odessa.
He and his wife, the former Mary
Lou Hamlett, have a daughter,
Ruth Ann, who is 2 1-2 years old.
Mary Lou is the daughter of Dr.
Earl Hamlett, pastor of St. Paul
Methodist Church in Abilene.
Dr. Frances Benge, who taught
dent assembly program prior to
the beginning of the holiday Dec.
17.
Christian Foundation observed
the Yuletide season with a party
for underprivileged children
Dec. 14. TIP, a girls' social club,
collected gifts for a similar ac-
tivity.
Gamma Sigma girls' social club
played host to 22 children from
Hendricks Home at a theater par-
ty Dec. 10.
Other clubs who held Christmas
socials are the Library Staff,
S e n a t u s Romanus, Quadrillers,
Band, Kappa Phi, German Club,
and Alpha Pi Alpha.
Spanish from 1948-1951, is em-
ployed for this session as vis-
iting professor of Spanish at Way-
land College. Her home is in Nor-
man, Oklahoma.
Jerry Watkins is teaching in
the Alamorgordo elementary
schools.
Bob said another ex, Dan Wad-
zeck, is farming in Rochester.
Dan's wife, Wynelle Lowrey Wad-
zeck, is secretary for the Roches-
ter schools. Youngest Lowrey,
Faye, is a McMurry junior.
Mrs. Anna Lou (Church) Shar-
er, '39, lives in Rochester. Her
husband, R. A. Shaver, is presi-
dent of the Rochester school
board.
R. R. (Bob) King, '37, visited
the campus recently. Bob is start-
ing his tenth year as superinten-
dent of the Rochester Schools.
His wife, the former Jo Robin-
son. attended McMurry in 1936-
37 and graduated in summer, '54.
She is teaching seventh grade.
Oil & Gas Library
Started At McM
Plans for setting up a West
Texas Oil and Gas Library at
McMurry College were disclosed
Tuesday, October 10, by Dr. An-
drew Rockover-Cecil, dean of the
college's School of Business Ad-
ministration.
Immediate purpose of the li-
brary is to supply Oil-industry
books and resource materials for
118 students enrolled in McMur-
ry's Oil Institute. An additional
objective is to gather this litera-
ture together for all citizens of
Abilene and the surrounding area
who need information on the pe-
troleum industry, Dr. Rockover-
Cecil said.
A large portion of the 1955-56
library budget of McMurry's
school of business will go for
additions to the library, the pro-
fessor said.
To supplement the college's ef-
forts in building the oil and gas
library, Dr. Rockover-Cecil and
Dr. Harold G. Cooke, McMurry
president, sent out 1,000 letters
requesting the assistance of area
oilmen in the undertaking.
Totem Beauties
Selected For '55
Eight McMurry co-eds were se-
lected Nov. 29 to be the 1955
Totem beauties by a panel of
seven male judges. The winners
were chosen from 15 girls previ-
ously nominated by the student
body.
Announcement of the eight
beauties will be made late next
spring when the yearbook is pre-
sented.
Nominees were Patsy Mills,
freshman from Abernathy; Helen
Fry and Margaret Sealy of Sweet-
water, senior and sophomore re-
spectively; Julie Massey, Munday
sophomore; Elna Ruth Peterson,
Dallas senior; Jo Lamb, Slaton
freshman.
Also, Jan Osborne, Abilene
sophomore; Pat Bennett and Nata-
lie Morris, Abilene freshmen; Jo-
A n n Killingsworth, sophomore
from Roby; Ella Hill, Canyon
senior; Velda Baldridge, sopho-
more from Morton; Rita Watkins,
Monahans sophomore; Yvonne
Caldwell, Baird sophomore; and
Biddy Bartlett, freshman from
Lubbock.
Christmas Party
Held December 13
The main Christmas social ac-
tivity for McMurry College stu-
dents was the President's Christ-
mas Party, annual event held on
Dec. 13 at Radford Student Life
Center.
Originated by Harold G. Cooke
in 1950, the party is sponsored
each year by two service clubs
on the McMurry campus—Wah
Wahtaysee and Circle K.
The party followed the tradi-
tional Christmas theme, with dec-
orations, program, refreshments,
and activity planned along that
line.
