Monk, Sledge Work on
Texas Methodist History
Dr. Robert Monk and Dr. Robert Sledge are
two of the four authors of a new book entitled
The Methodist Excitement in Texas, a history of
the Methodist Church in Texas. The other two
authors are Dr. Norman Spellman,
Southwestern University professor of religion
and philosophy, and Walter N. Vernon of
Nashville, retired editor of United Methodist
publications.
Dr. Monk, Chairman of the Division of
Humanities, and Dr. Sledge, Chairman of the
Division of Social Sciences, are previously
published authors.
The book is the first one-volume history of
Methodism in Texas to be written since 1880.
It was an idea of the Texas United Methodist
Historical Society in the late 1970s and Dr.
Monk and Dr. Sledge adopted it as a bicenten-
nial project, as the United Methodist Church in
the United States is observing its 200th an-
niversary this year.
The McMurry authors emphasized that the
book includes the actions of both ministers and
laypersons, both men and women, and
represents churches which are English speak-
ing, Spanish speaking, Black congregations,
and those of German and Swiss background.
Monk, Stamey Write
Their Own Textbook
Dr. Robert C. Monk and Dr. Joseph D. Stamey
of the religion and philosophy departments
have co-authored a textbook, Exploring Chris-
tianity, published in March by Prentice-Hall.
The book came into being because of the dif-
ficulty the professors had in finding a suitable
textbook for the courses that they, among
others, teach at McMurry entitled "Introduc-
tion to Christianity." Most books they en-
countered assumed too broad a knowledge of
the field or were too concentrated; thus, they
decided to write their own textbook. The book
can also be used for a comparative religion
course.
They have been using the unrevised
manuscript as a textbook for the past two
years, and they feel that this experience, in-
cluding as it did, comments from students,
greatly improved the quality of the book.
The two, along with four other professors at
McMurry at the time, collaborated on another
textbook, Exploring Religious Meaning,
published in 1973 by Prentice-Hall, also. Dr.
Bert Affleck, professor and Director of the In-
tern Program at Perkins School of Theology at
SMU; Dr. Ken Lawrence, Chairperson of the
Religious Studies Program at TCU; Dr. Tet-
sunao Yamamori, who is working with a group
in Switzerland to alleviate world hunger; and
the late Dr. Walter Hofheinz worked on the
book with them. The book filled a need at that
time for a textbook in its field and is being us-
ed by some large Catholic universities and
several state universities, including the Univer-
sities of Nebraska, North Carolina, and Ohio. It
is increasing in sales, and the group of authors
has been asked by Prentice-Hall to prepare a
third edition.
