Best, worst of times —
Kendell calls GLBT community's progress 'amazing'
By David Webb Staff Writer
GLBT society

living through its
best and worst
times ever,
according to Kate
Kendell, execu-
tive director of the
National Center
for Lesbian
Rights.
Kendell visited Dallas last weekend
to address the North Texas GLBT
Chamber of Commerce and the First
Kate Kendell
Unitarian Church of Dallas. Shannon
Minter, legal director of the San
Francisco-based group, also spoke at
the church seminar about the gay
community's "hopes, needs and
fears."
At the chamber speech, Kendell
said the progress made by GLBT
activists during the past two decades
amazes her. Never before have gay
and lesbian people felt such comfort in
being out and enjoying a sense of self,
she said.

Log Cabin fundraiser
Appearance scheduled as Schwarzenegger considers
vetoing bill requiring gay history be added to textbooks
By Lisa Leff Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO — Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger plans to
headline a fundraiser for gay
Republicans in Hollywood next week
in what would be his first appearance
in front of a gay audience since he
took office, according to the event's
coordinators.
The Thursday fundraiser for Log
Cabin Republicans comes as

catching up to do.

from gay history to be added to public
school text books in California. The
governor already has indicated he
opposes the measure.

Episcopal Church elects 1 st
woman leader, rejects outright
ban on confirming gay bishops
Jefferts Schori's election
prompts Texas diocese to
ask to leave U.S. church
From Staff and Wire Reports
Controversy took center stage at
the Episcopal General Convention
this week as the election of the
denomination's first woman leader
prompted one diocese to vote to leave
the church, and delegates on
Wednesday approved a resolution
urging church leaders to "exercise
restraint" when considering gay can-
didates for bishop.
Delegates to the convention had
earlier rejected an outright ban on
ordaining gay bishops that Anglican
leaders from more conservative
provinces around the world had
demanded.
The Episcopal Church is the U.S.
arm of the 77 million-member
Anglican Communion, the family of
churches with roots that trace back to
the Church of England.
Delegates to the convention elect-
ed Bishop Katherine Jefferts Schori
of Las Vegas as the presiding bishop
Katherine Jefferts Schori on Wednesday preaches her first sermon as presiding bishop of
the Episcopal Church in America. She called on the church to "lay down our narrow self
interests and heal the hurting" as it debated the issue of gay bishops.
of the denomination, making her the
first woman to lead any church in the
global Anglican Communion.
Within hours of that vote, the
Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth
voted to seek leadership elsewhere
within the worldwide Anglican com-
munion. If the request is approved by
Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan
Williams, the Fort Worth diocese will
become the first to break ties with the
American church, but most likely not
the last.
