CHARITY
In a small New England village
^heje I f^uenwr visit live two old
people whose lives were cuinfsd in
childhood b^use t)>ey were' tadght to
took down upon then? neighbors.
Their family wag then wealthy. To-
day the old man and his old maid
jsisijer have not a penny left in the
world except tbe ®jW house which is
slowly failing to ruin.
But the neighbors, poor people
mostly, " have kept this old man ab4
woman alive for years and still do
They are top proud to accept food o*
clothing offered them, bridling in-
dignantly when anyone suggests they
may be 4n need. So the ldiidly neigh
bors leave baskets of provision^ op
the front7 step, ring the bell and run
.away! Other neighbors le^ve fire-
wood in the back yard, drop around
after dark and shovel a path through
the snow frgm the gate io the Iront"
door. ■
That is real charity. It is the sort
of charity that "vaunteth not itself,
is not puffed tip,' as the stout Apostle
Paul pots it in the King James trans-
lation of the Bible. And it is proba-
bly commoner among the poor than
among the rich. Only those who hive
known the pinch of need know what
it means to those who feel it.
