Wadsworth Discloses New Plans,
Seeks Reputation For Hamanities
BY JIM ZUMWALT
Thresher Editorial Staff
"I'm split three ways." was
the reply of Dr. Philip A. Wads-
worth when asked about his du-
ties at Rice this year. Dr. Wads-
worth is the University of Ill-
inois professor whom President
Pitzer appointed last spring to
serve as Dean of Humanities.
Before being appointed to the
deanship Dr. Wadsworth had
been selected to serve as the
chairman of the Rice French
Department. In addition to his
two administrative postions he
will teach a graduate seminar
in French poetry.
Work With Faculty
As Dean of Humanities Dr.
Wadsworth noted, "My own

BENEVOLENT 1964 CLASS
GIVES COLLEGES BOOKS
The surplus accumulated by
the Senior Class of 1964 was
donated to the colleges for use
in library acquisitions, class
president Sears McGee report-
ed this summer.
,. In..a.,move, McGee character-
ized as either "a graceful swan-
song for the classes or as evi-
dence of cooperation" between
classes and the colleges, the
seniors donated their $270 to
the five existing colleges, with
an equal sum allotted to Marga-
ret Root Bi"own College upon
completion.
Class treasurer Alfred Lowey-
Ball reported that the books
purchased will bear bookplates
describing their origin. Senior
classes traditionally donate some
sort of remembrance of their
passing to the University, with
the bench next to the library
being the most familiar example
of a class gift.
the faculty." The office will
serve as a general clearinghouse
handling interdepartmental
problems.
In an effort to improve the
quality of a Rice education in
the humanities, Dr. Wadsworth
will offer guidelines of leader-
ship, try to strengthen weak de-
partments, and direct recruit-
ing.
From his French Department
chair Dr. Wadsworth pointed
out typical advances. With one
exception, each graduate teach-
ing assistant in French will
have only one undergraduate
class to teach. The Department
will have Professor Louis Lan-
dre, an authority on compara-
tive literature from the Sor-
bonne, on the Rice faculty one
semester each year.
Dr. Wadsworth indicated that
he would study the relation be-
tween the sciences and the hu-
manities on the Rice campus,
but he said that he had not been
here long enough to make any
statement on the subject yet.
Rice Not Tech School
Tis only comment was, "Rice's
reputation as an engineering in-
stitute is unfortunate. The Hu-
manities have been well treated
for a long time here at Rice."
The Wadsworths have been in
Houston since July. During the
summer Dr. Wadsworth spent
three weeks doing research in
Paris and nursing a broken
ankle.
Dr. Wadsworth is a 1935 Phi
Beta Kappa graduate of Yale
University. He received his Ph.
D. from Yale in 1939. He has
served on the faculty of North-
western University and the Uni-
versity of Illinois.

Politicians Slated
For Speeches By
Forum Committee
A possible appearance of one
of the national Republican
nominees as well as other
political figures are the main
attractions in the Forum Com-
mittee's program for the first
semester, according to Forum
chairman Chuck Guy King.
During the national campaign
the committee will sponsor sev-
eral political speeches. One of
the Republican national candi-
dates will speak, plus several
state candidates from both
parties.
On November 8, Representa-
tive Henry Gonzales, a De-
mocrat from San Antonio, will
speak on either the significance
of the election or minority group
problems.
The movie "Point of Order,"
which concerns Senator Mc-
Carthy, will be featured on No-
vember 23. A debate will fol-
low between L. Brent Bozell,
the author of "McCarthy and
His Enemies," and a member
of Rice's faculty.
A philosophy professor at the
University of Texas will be at
Rice on December 10. John R.
Silber will speak on "Capital
Punishment."
In late December or January,
a military speaker will discuss
the military situation in South
Vietnam.
