Many factors in Owl BB success
By FORD HALL
Before the basketball season
began, most sportwriters picked
Rice to be no better than fourth
in the Southwest Conference.
Why then did the Owls succeed
in capturing sole possession of
first place? It would be unfair
to neglect the contributions of
those players who did not re-
ceive very much recognition or
those who played very little. It
would also be unfair not to men-
tion the support of the Rice
fans, especially since the Owls
won every one of the conference
games played ,at home. Never-
theless, the team's surprising
success was mainly due to the
efforts of a few individuals who
deserve recognition.
In the beginning, Coach Don
Knodel and Assistant Coach
George Mehaffey did not have
a plethora of talent with which
to work. The team could not
fast break effectively for two
reasons: lack of overall speed
and inconsistent ball-handling.
In a press conference before the
season, the "Silent K" pointed
out that he had to respect the
safety of the fans: sometimes
last year passes were inad-
vertently completed to the Tip-
Off Club or Rice students dur-
ing overanxious fast breaks.
Although his comment was face-
tious, it was also significant.
In addition, the Rice team
lacked a consistent post attack
and at times rebounded poorly.
The optimum strategy devised
by the coaches had to be a deli-
berate offense requiring pati-
ence," execution, and high per-
centage outside shooting. Rarely
did the team win on a cold night,
unless the defense was very ef-
fective. Therefore, Coach Kno-
del certainly deserved the hon-
ors he received at the end of
the season. Coach Mehaffey also
deserves recognition, a fact the
"Silent K" stated throughout
the season.
Gary Reist has to be singled
out for his importance in the
team's victories. An unanimous
choice by the wire services for
All - Southwest Conference,
Gary was the only player on the
entire team who could do it all:
score, play defense, and run the
offense. Texas A&M Coach
Shelby Metcalf was so im-
pressed by Reist that he called
him the most valuable player
in the conference.
Although perhaps to a lesser
extent, Steve Wendel and Tom
Myer were still invaluable mem-
bers of the team. The Wonder
came through with outstanding-
defensive performances in sev-
eral key games, and Boom-
Boom's outside shooting was
sometimes the entire Rice of-
fense.
Next year's team is, on paper,
better. With Reist, Myer, and
Don Snyder back, Coach Knodel
will have experience, depth and
quality at the guard position.

6'8" Steve Emshoff could very
well be a starter at center in
his sophomore year. The "Con-
dor's" rebounding and defensive
ability should complement the
talents of another current fresh-
man, 6'11" Mark Wehrle, who
will probably play forward and
high post. The other forward
position could be filled by any
of a number of candidates. The
overall result should be a strong-
er, taller team with even better
shooting, rebounding, and de-
fensive talent.
Much will depend, of course,
on the players'^ibility to play
together. Baylor had the best
talent in the SWC this year,
but the team simply did not play
together for a number of rea-
sons. The Rice Owls will have
to work hard to win: no one is
going to lie down for them. Still,
this year's SWC Champions will
have an even better chance of
winning the title next year.
