Owl squad braced for opening clash with low-rated VMI
BY MARTY BELASCO AND
GARY RACHLIN
The most glaring reminder of
the Jess Neely era, assuming his
"set-up-the-punt" offense of the
GO's will be abandoned in lieu
of an imaginative, and highly
effective offense for the 70's, is
this year's football schedu^
which pits the Owls against the
Keydets of the Virginia Military
Institute from exciting Lexing-
ton, Virginia. Little is know
about VMI—perhaps to the re-
lief of the Keydet supporter.
However we shall assume our
responsibility by swallowing any
humane tendencies we might
possess in order to analyze
VMI's football capabilities.
Amazing
From a 19G9 point of view,
VMI has amazingly little ca-
pability to analyze. They were
0 and 10 last season and did
not manage to score until the
fourth game of the season when
they were defeated by Virginia,
28 to 10.They were outscored last
year by a margin of 331 points,
409 to 78. Their total offense
was 1813 yards compared to
4905 yards by the opposition. In
rushing, passing, and receiving
the statistics lead to the same
conclusion—that the 19G9 Key-
dets (what a gross nickname)
bore little resemblance to a com-
petent college football team.
But sports fans, 1970 is a new-
year, the beginning of a new
decade, and, even more import-
ant, the beginning of a new
football season. What will this
year's Keydets bo like? From
all that we have read we have
concluded that this year will
be similar to last in that they
most likely will again lose 10
games.
The difference is that they
have added Furman (a college
—not one of the ten plagues) to
their schedule and upset them
last Saturday by a 13-0 margin.
Ridiculous
Their starting offense, com-
posed of 9 lettermen, wi'l be led
by senior quarterback Murphy
Sprinkel who passed for a ri-
diculous .331 percentage last
season. The defense is also com-
posed mostly of lettermen and
includes such notables as Jim
Bailey, David Ellington, and
Paul Fraim—none of them All-
American candidates.
Under normal circumstances
having lettermen in starting
positions is an asset. However
we can not see how these veter-
ans, who demonstrated last year
their total lack of football prow-
ess and who must, after last
year and despite last week's win,
must possess a losing attitude,
could possibly lead their team
to any kind of respectable sea-
son. In short, VMI is the worst
college team we have ever seen
personally—even worse than
Baylor.
Neely humor
Considering the facts that
VMI cannot pass, run, block, or
Friedman's pick of the pack for intramurals
tackle, one is moved to inquire
why Jess Neely included them
on our schedule. Perhaps he fe't
that a game with VMI would
provide a winning spirit for the
1970 Owls. Or perhaps Jess
Neely, behind his southern gen-
tleman facade, possessed one of
the most unusual senses of hum-
or that Rice (and VMI for that
matter) has ever witnessed.
Whatever the reason, Rice
does play VMI this Saturday
night at 7:30 in Astro-turfed
Rice Stadium. It is a pity that
the game is not being played
in the afternoon thus enabling
the true football fans to view
the University of Houston-Syra-
cuse game that evening—but
that's sports.
By MARK FRIEDMAN
Intramural football has a new
look this year with the gradu-
ation of Dudley Van Court, Joe
Pratt, and the rest of the New
York Jets. Several teams seem
to have a good shot at the,
championship.
A record 32 teams signed up,
including six freshman and five
grad teams. Far and away the
strongest grad team is the Geo-
jocks. After 'weeks of diligent
workouts, it appears that they
will run away with the league.
Of the 21 undergraduate
teams, no less than seven have
reasonable title hopes. Quarter-
back is, of course, the key po-
sition, and this year there are
more good ones than there have
been in quite a while.
The pre-season predictions:
1. Second Edition — (Mon-
day) — With Lou Hancock
and Donnie Brogna, they should
repeat as champs. The addition
of Eick Hollington filled what
was the weak spot of the team,
safety.
2. Bandoleros—(Monday) —
This could be the year for Tom
McGarity, Scott Wise, and QB
Chris Chrisman to go all" the
way. The defense looked strong
in its 40-0 walloping of Blan-
da's Men Monday, especially

3. Die or Reaffirm — (Wed-
nesday)—The strong arm of
Gary Wendell might carry this
team to the championship.
They were one of last year's
best squads (The Brick Pig)
and should breeze through the
creampuff Wednesday league.
4. Pandora's Box—(Tuesday)
—With Tony Seidel at the helm,
this team will have to be rec-
koned with before it is all over.
Ford Hall, Eff Martin, and
Davifl Gibbs should provide
enough support to win the Tues-
day League.
.5. Fagetts — (Friday) — In
past years they have had a
weakness at QB, but with the
addition of Jody Turner the
offense should roll up the
points, mostly on bombs to end
Mike Estep. But the defense
will probably again carry the
team. Five-year veterans Jim
Boler, Doug Murphy, and Joel
(Chuck Howley) Elliot.
I'ossible Breakthroughs:
1. Eleetra 225
2. Bang Gang
3. Cox-Men
This week's big clash is Mon-
day at 4:30 on Field 2, the base-
ball outfield. The No. 1 rated
Second Edition plays the sec-
ond-ranked Bandoleros. The
winner could easily take home
all the marbles.
