nockers had 2 TD's called back
in a first half that saw them
collect 7 penalties. Five second
half interceptions, including 3
by Mike Webster and one re-
turned for a touchdown by Bill

TD performance (2 running and
2 passing), tender, the Nodders
defensed the Spread Eagles 15-

little offense and stiff defense.

UNDERGROUND SPORTS
INFORMATION DIRECTOR
This past glorious weekend of
Rice sports was highlighted by
the annual two-day, two-game
expedition which the Rice Soc-
cer Team makes in meeting its
Texas Collegiate Soccer League
commitments. This year's tar-
gets were Pan American Uni-
versity in the harder town of
Edinburg and Texas A&I Uni-
versity in Kingsville.
At 5:15 am. Saturday morn-
ing the red Baker Bus, loaded
with twenty groggy but raring-
to-go Rice soccer jocks and
their enthusiastic coach "Big
Al" Van Helden, pulled out
through the Houston darkness
for Edinburg, where their first
game was scheduled for 2 that
afternoon. After ten hours of
weenying, sleeping, and stops
for gas anil minor repairs, the
trusty transportation, guided by
the indefatigable Baker Bus
drivers, Cathy "Amazon" Ken-
eda and Debby "Ma" Irvine, ar-
rived at Pan American only 45
minutes late. Having changed
into their uniforms while rol-
ling between Falfurrias and
Edinburg, the Rice team first
raced to the restrooms and then
lined up for a three o'clock kick^.
off against an obviously deter-
mined Pan American team.
Rice took the lead with a
well-taken goal by "Big" Gunn
in the tenth minute and upped
it five minutes later with a
score from winger Tischner. At-
tacking pressure and reckless
• defense kept Pan Am away
from the Rice goal, and the half
ended with the score 2-0. In
the second half Rice pulled
ahead to an out-of-reach lead
as Jim "Coffeebean" Maitland
added another, and Lacey com-
pleted his "hat-trick" to run
the Rice total to six. The un-
cannily intrepid Rice defense
was rarely pressed, and the
final whistle saw the Owl3
calmly walk off with a smash-
ingly decisive 6-0 victory over
Pan American University.
The Owls left immediately
for an overnight stay in Kings-
ville (Coach Van Helden sagely
decided that Edinburg was too
close to the border for the"
team's colloctive health.) A lack
of Persian, Greek, and Dutch
passports precipitated a mom-
ent of consternation at a Bor-
der Patrol roadblock. Yet the
team retained its forward line
and after assorted team mem-
bers emerged from beneath
their seats the team arrived
safely in Kingsville to rest for
the next day's game against
Texas A&I.
The road-trip's second con-
test kicked off at 11 Sunday
morning and three minutes lat-
er the left winger Tischner put
the Owls ahead to stay. A par-
ade of goals against a sadly
outclassed A&I team developed
before the swaying throngs of
screaming, emotional Rice fans:
Maitland in the eighteenth min-
ute (Scott Thurston's assist),
"Boom Boom" Lacey in the
twenty-third and twenty-sev-
enth, Tasho Triantaphyllis in
the thirty-seventh minute, and
Tischner again in the thirty-
eighth minute (assist Lacey),
adding up to a 6-0 Rice lead at
the half.
When the second half began
it was the same repetitive and
redundant story: Wouter Blum
scored his first of the weekend
in the third minute, one of the
A&I fullbacks scored an "own
goal" (when you score seven
you get one free), Blum re-
peated in the eighteenth mi-
ute, and "Coffeebean" Maitland
administered the "c o u p de
gi'ace" to A&I with two last
goals. Meanwhile at the other
end of the field the uncanny
Rice defense, feling sorry for
the starving A&I forwards,
graciously allowed two consola-
tion goals. The final score was
11-2. The thrilled fighting Owls
had tasted victory; A&I had
felt the agony of defeat.
Tired but happy the Owls ar-
rived back at the Rice Gym at
7 pm. that night to the cheer-
ing welcome of hundreds of
Rice students who had already
heard about their exploits.
Of course, victory was all
that could be expected. The first
league game of the season, that
with U of H, had gotten the
team off to a good start.
We would have printed the
story last week, if we'd had
room.
The Rice record now stands
at 5 wins and one tie (3-0 in
conference play). "Coffeebean"
