Spring sports grind to a halt with tennis, golf tourneys
by BRUCE BAKER
Spring sports ' will wind up
with season-ending golf and
tennis tourneys on tap for this
wekend.
The tennis match versus
A&M last Tuesday week was
played after all (despite last
week's incorrect report). In-
door facilities were found and,
in the early morning hours,
liice lost 5-2.
Over at UH this Tuesday
Iiice netters were again up-
ended, this time by the Cougars,
•r>-2. Rice lost their top two
matches but Gus Pellizi beat
'Bob Ogle G-l, (3-4 and Barry
Josselson beat Jim McNairy
1-0, G-4, 6-4. Probably the big-
gest disappointment was the
inability of our top doubles
team to win. However Gus
played a "smart" game in his
opponent. Josselson has been
coming on strong of late and
might bring a couple of vic-
tories to Rice in the SWC com-
petition coming up.
Starting this Thursday in
Austin is the Southwest Con-
ference tennis tournament. Rice
will be represented by Emilio
Montano, Jorge Berman, Gus
Pellizi and Barry Josselson. It
will be Montano-Berman and
probably Pellizi - T u r p i n in
doubles.
Tournament play has brought
out the tiger in our players so
far; hopefully this week will
be no exception. Montano and
Berman are solid players who
could get quite far. The ex-
pected top finishers, though,
will be Tim Vann and George
Hardie of SMU, Lee Merry of
UH, and Dan Nelson of Texas.
'These are the four guys who
finals. Expect a fourth or fifth
place finish for Rice.
If Rice does not win a singles
or doubles championship this
1957 that they will not have
year it will be the first time
won one or the other, or the
team championship. (SWU won
team championship this year.)
The SWC golf tournament
will start, same time, same
place, alongside tennis. In Aus-
tin Thursday, Rice will be rep-
resented by Mark Johnson, Eric
Dannex*, Alan Ahrens, and Bill
Lee plus one more. This should
be a two horse race between
Texas and UH.
Things were generally dis-
appointing for Rice trackters at
the Kansas Relays last weekend.
Rice's big stars Ken Stadel and
Mike Cronholm failed to even
reach the finals in their special-
ties, Stadel in the discus and
les. Cronholm missed qualifying
by lOOths of a second in the
time trials used. In addition
Rice's mile relay team failed
to qualify and the sprint med-
ley bunch reached the finals but
did not place.
Dave Roberts came in third
in the pole vault at 16' 6M".
He was unsuccessful at 17'
6*4".
However Rice had several
pleasant performances. Jim
Pearce had his best throw of
the year in the javelin of 243'
5". He placed third. Denny
Dicke ran a 47.0 in the 440
yai'd dash, also placing third.
The Owls distance medley team
ran its best time ever at Rice
— 9:55.8 but finished only
sixth. And freshman Mike Fulg-
hum, who has been rapidly im-
proving, ran a 14.0 in the 120
yard high hurdles to finish
failed Saturday in the discus,
threw the shot 58' 43A" Friday
to finish fifth.
This weekend it's off to the
Drake Relays in Des Moines,
Iowa for about 15 Rice track
men.
After that Rice is entered in
a tri-meet with Texas A&M
and Texas in Austin, May 3.
All those players who do not
have conflicts with finals will
attend.
The SWC Track meet will be
in Austin, Saturday May 19.
There will be other compe-
tition for our men in blue in
the summer. Among them will
be the N.C.A.A. National Cham-
pionships in Baton Rouge, June
7-9. Dave Roberts will un-
doubtedly be there to defend his
N.C.A.A. championship. Ken
Stadel, Mike Cronholm, and Jim
Peax*ce will be there to try to
easy victory over a very good should make it to the semi- Cronholm in the 440 yard hurd- sixth in the finals. Stadel, who make their marks.
