Batters lose to Longhorns; Baylor plays here tomorrow
by BRUCE BAKER
Rice baseball comes to a
screeching: halt this weekend
when Baylor plays here for a
Friday doubleheader and a Sat-
urday single.
Last weekend the Owls were
run over by the Texas Ex-
press, the Longhorns taking
all three games in Austin.
Championship - bound Texas
swept a doubleheader Friday
3-2 and 13-1 and took Satur-
days game 10-8. Mike Pettit
started the last two games and
had the dubious distinction of
losing two in one series, pitch-
ing only 5 2/3 innings to do it.
In the first game Rice crossed
the Longhorns up by pitching
Jay Temple, who responded
very credibly, giving up only
three runs, all unearned and
all in the first. He yielded only
three hits, but six walks. Un-
fortunately, Texas pitched their
ace Ron Roznovsky, who yield-
ed only two runs. Both pitchers
went the distance.
In the nightcap it was all
Texas—they scored seven runs
in the second and the game was
over. Rice could only muster
five hits and one run off two
Texas pitchers.
Saturday Rice got their bats

ed out fifteen hits, good for
eight runs. They left twelve
men on base. Texas batters
mustered twelve hits off Rice
aces. Mike Pettit and Bruce
Henley but ten walks killed
us. It allowed the Longhorns to
get ten runs and the victory.
Freshman Tommy Smart pit-
ched the last two innings, giv-
ing up nary a hit.
Tuesday Rice played a re-
match with St. Edward's Uni-
versity and their bat girls.
Steve Holder and Tommy
Smart held the opposition score-
nigs as Rice came away with
a sweep. Holder pitched a
seven-inning two-hitter in the
first game winning 2-0. The
runs were scored in the fifth.
Two walks and a single by
Holder filled the bases. Then
Tommy "Dog" Lasater hit a
ground shot to the pitcher
which he finally got a hold on
and threw to the plate for the
force. Then the catcher threw
toward second but the ball went
into the dirt and into center
field. One run scored. The sec-
ond scored on Ted Nowak's

sacrifice squeeze bunt. Rice
had only five hits themselves
off pitcher Rudy Ramirez.
The second game was score-
less for ten innings. Rice's
Tommy Smart went all the way,
giving up seven hits. He only
walked one and hit a batter,
and very coolly got out of sev-
eral tight spots.
Two St. Edward's pitchers
were able to match Smart
stride for stride. Starter Lindell
pitched a strong four innings,
striking out six, and Tony
Ivonderla pitched the last seven.
Rice finally won in the eleventh.
Two walks by Konderla after
two were out brought on La-
sater again and he responded
with the game-ending single.
Darkness was rapidly ap-
proaching and this had been
announced as the last inning, so
it was good to come away with
a win and not a tie. What was
it Darx*ell Royal said about
ties?
After these games Rice is 4-0
in conference and 14-12 for the
season. Leading conference hit-
ters for Rice are Len Shelby at
.381, Bryan Boyne at .267, Mike
Macha at .256 and Tommy La-
sater at .239. Leading RBI men
are Shelby arid Boyne with
eight apiece. Shelby is a lead-
ing candidate for all - SWC
catcher.
