Kenneth Thompson, a basso
from Philadelphia, will sing in
a recital at 8:30pm on Friday,
April 27, in Hamman Hall. He
will be accompanied by Mrs.
Robert L. Lee of Houston. The
performance, sponsored by the
Shepherd School of Music, is
open to the public without
charge.
Before becoming a singer,
Thompson was a research sci-
entist in biology, studying
nerve regeneration.
Thompson debuted profession-
ally with the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra after studying with
Miss Glee Maeck of the Chi-
cago Conservatory and at the
Chicago Musical College.
A protege of Jan Peerce,
Thompson has concertized, sung
orchestrally, made a name in
oratorio and expanded into
opera under the guidance of
Max Rudolf of the Curtis In-
stitute. Previous appearances
have been with the Bach Fes-
tival of Bethlehem, the Little
Orchestra Society and the Fres-
no Philharmonic.
Thompson treats a wide range
of the recital repertoire, from
the flexible coloratura of Pur-
cell to the soaring lines of
Mahler and the rhythmic earth-
iness of West Indian and Amer-
ican Negro spirituals.

Heino took the silver award,
the same Military Order, and
the silver medal American Le-
gion Award. Thomas Shields
picked up the Association of the
U. S. Army ROTC Award and
silver medal Scholastic Excel-

Philpy was awarded the Beck-
er and Reserve Officers Asso-
ciation Awards, and Tom Craw-
ford received the Allen Leon
Wright Trophy and The C.
Grady Smith Memorial Award.
