American Graffiti is top choice for summer film cruisers
by H. DAVID DANGLO
Where were you in '62? I was
in fourth grade, and some peo-
ple here were still in kinder-
garten; but whether or not you
remember the era of cruisin;
■spoonin' and croonin', American
Graffiti is the movie for you.
George Lucas (first film:
THX 1138) has filmed a re-
markable study of the mores of
the fifties and sixties, when
drive-ins, sock hops, "drinkin'
the hard stuff" (with Coke)
and cruising in your stripped
down '52 Chevy was the thing.
And with little advance pub-
licity, American Graffiti has
become one of the most popular
films of the summer across the
nation (at Houston's Alabama,
it's going into a seventh week).
Besides the outrageous set-
ting, Graffiti has got a great
story line, involving the lives
of four guys and their girl-
friends the night before two
leave for college "back East".
Ronny Howard (remember
Opie?) is school president, go-
ing steady with the head cheer-
leader (Cindy Williams). Rich>
ard Dreyfuss, her brother, is a
nit who sees his dreamgirl
cruising around in a Thunder-
bird (everywhere) but gets in-
volved with the Ph'aroahs, a
black-leather hoodlum gang, in-
stead. Charlie Martin Smith
(Terry the Toad) picks up
Candy Clark in his borrowed
wheels with the line "Gee, you
look just like Connie Stevens",
then loses the car. Our hero,
unbeatable car jock Milford,

(Paul Lemat), ends up with a
14-year-old boyfriend hooker, to
create one of the funniest duos
ever. Bo Hopkins ("isn't he
neat") is the greaser. (Milford's
license plate reads THX*138;
director Lucas' first film, a
sloppy attempt at futuristic
film style, obviously has a big
place in his heart).
The real star is Wolfman
Jack, the West Coast deejay
who has the largest following

the-air" antics' with a groovy
comba of tunes like "Big Girls
Don't Cry", "Rock Around the
Clock", "Surfer Girl", you name
it.
Some of the comic incidents
may drive you into hysterics,
especially if you remember do-
ing the things yourself.
The characterizations in this
film are all perfect, down to
the most minute details (looks
of disgust, drunkenness, cigar-
ette pack rolled up in the sleeve,
etc.); the direction is spacy
(note the director's first film
again) especially at Mel's
Drive-In, where waitresses
deliver orders on roller skates.
Most people who have seen
this one have seen it twice; I
can't recommend it enough.
American Graffiti will play
Houston through October, un-
less the crowds get bigger.
