Smart saves Razorback opener, but Owl title hopes gone
by GAURANG VYAS
The Rice baseball team set a
club record for wins in one sea-
son by taking their 20th victory
last Friday against the Arkansas
Razorbacks. This highlighted a
week which later saw the Owls
drop a double-header to the low-
ly Razorbacks, mathematically
eliminating them from the SWC
title race.
Rice won the series opener,
6-5, as their sleeping bats finally
came to life, battering a pair of
Arkansas pitchers for six runs on
nine hits. The Owls needed ev-
ery one as ace righthander Mike
Pettit surrendered 5 runs on 8
student prices for thesis
& dissertations.

Tommy Smart in the eighth.
Despite this poor showing, Pettit
picked up his seventh win of the
season, while Smart was credited
with the save.
Rice's chances of winning the
conference title went up in
smoke on Saturday. They blew
a 3-0 lead in the opener, before
losing 6-3. The Razorbacks got
to Rice starter Larry Reneau for
two runs in the fifth, and four
more in the sixth. Shib Simon
took advantage of the small di-
mensions in Fort Smith, Arkan-
sas, as he homered for the sec-
ond time in as many days.
The Owls continued to hit in
the nightcap, with seven runs on
eight hits, including home runs
by Tracy Terry and John Jacob-
son. However, for the first time
this season, Bruce Henley was

hit hard. The Razorbacks picked
Henley apart with twelve hits,
scoring nine runs in the process
to win 9-7.
The Hilltoppers from St. Ed-
wards U. invaded the campus on
Tuesday. The Owls sent them
packing by scores of 5-3 and
5-4.
Mike Macha displayed some
power, hitting a two-run homer
in the second inning. Randy
Lamprecht then delivered a two-
run single to put Rice ahead 4-0.
A two-run homer by Mike Pfirio
put St. Edwards' within one at
4-3, but the Owls hung on to
give Mike Pettit his eighth win
against two losses.
The Owls closed out the night
cap, 5-4.
With only eight games remain-
ing, second baseman Ted Nowak
continues to lead the Owls in
most offensive categories. He
has a club-leading .302 batting
average, (the only one over .300
on the team). He leads in runs
scored with 20; in hits with 32;
and he's second in runs batted in
(behind Shib Simon) with 17.
Mike Macha leads in home runs
with seven, while Tracy Terry
has three. John Jacobson has
the stolen base title wrapped up
with fifteen swipes. The total
team batting average is an anem-
ic .225.
Cross-town rival Houston will
come in for a three-game set
starting Friday at 2pm. Rice
ends its home season Tuesday.
JOCK NOTES
With 2 starts left, Mike Pettit
has a good chance of becoming,
the all-time winning pitcher for
the Owls. He needs a win Friday
against Houston, and one next
week against Texas A&M. The
game Friday commences as usual
at 2:30pm, while the double-
header Saturday begins at 1:00
pm.
Head football coach A1 Co-
nover has not yet divided his
squads for the Blue-Gray game
on Friday. He's "extremely
pleased" with the development
of the offensive line this spring.
However, the defensive second-
ary is still a major concern. Inju-
ries in the secondary have made
it virtually impossible to eval-
uate the talent here.
As expected, the new basket-
ball coach Bob Polk retained
Don Knodel's assistants McCoy
McLemore and Greg Willimas.
Recruiting is in high gear, with
the major emphasis being on
corralling local talent. The dead-
line for signing prospects is Ap-
ril 17.
The track team will head to
Austin this weekend for the Te-
xas Relays . . . The tennis team,
which still has a shot at the SWC
title, will be in Austin next Wed-
nesday to play the tough Texas
Longhorns in a crucial match.
