Final Survival Seminar focuses on health care
by Steve Sullivan
The 1977 Survival Seminar
series ended Monday night,
when Dr. Ben Ormend, M.D.,
gave his views of health
services. Dr. Ormend is a Rice
alumnus, class of '58, and is
currently an alumni member
of the University Committee
on Student Health. Comment-
ing on the fact that Rice
students are sent to the Ben
Taub emergency room if they
need any kind of medical
service when the Health
Service is closed, Ormen said
that the emergency room is
"great for gunshot wounds or

possible that the lunch menu
would be altered to drop the
less popular offerings, and
hopefully to serve the items
the students like most.
Breakfast presents no
problem, since Food Service
serves only about 35% of the
on-campus students each
morning.
Rubash had hoped to have
shipments from Dannon's
arrive two or three times a
week, but the surprising
demand has forced daily
shipments. Some problems
4?ave been encountered in
attempting to keep all the
flavors in each college.
Rubash anticipates that
when the program stabilizes
the flavors will be rotated in
the colleges, with about half of
the 14 choices available each
meal.

not destroyed or depleted. Yes,

resources...Built machines to a
zenith of production...and for
the next 15 years we used
world resources. We took them
at our price; nobody else was in
the bidding.
The primary problem
encountered so far by Food
Service is the desire of the
students to "rip off' yogurt to
take back to their rooms for
snacking. This practice drives
up the cost of feeding the
students, "even to the point
that the yogurt might have to
be removed from the menu."
Rubash said she hopes that
situation does not occur,
because she wants to keep the
yogurt flowing.
"But," Connally finalized,
"the days of cheap raw
materials are over."
According to Connally,
Congress procrastinated too
long in dealing with these and
other issues he cited briefly:
air pollution, water scarcity,
poor transit systems (metro-
politan and nationwide).
"Government has a real
stake in pure water, clean air
and all of these platforms," he
said. "However, our form of
government is not designed to
operate anything. It is
designed to check and
crosscheck. It must establish a
new relationship between
government, labor and
business to achieve a working
partnership."
"But how do you motivate
our government?" Connally
asked. He suggested two ways:

stabbings, but if you go in
there with a common cold,
you're in trouble."
Ormend stated that finding
a doctor is one's "first problem
in the outside world," and that
provide new incentives for
members of Congress, and
take a different approach in
politics.
"It's time to gain the
national interest and put it in
proper perspective," he
affirmed. "I suggest limitation
of terms: one six year
Presidential term, one eight-
year Senate term, two four-
year Congress terms."
"Government," he con-
cluded, "has to become
reasonable, realistic, and
decisive."
it's a good idea to start looking
for one before a dire need for
one arises. The four things you
should look for in choosing a
doctor are 1) qualifications,
2) proximity, 3) facilities, and
4) cost. A doctor's qualifica-
tions can be checked with the
local county medical society.
You should also try to find a
doctor whose office is not too
far from your home. Facilities
takes into consideration how
well-equipped his office is,
what hospital he's associated
with, and which emergency
rooms he uses.
The cost of health care has
tripled in the last 5 years and
has risen 1000% since 1950. Dr.
Ormend said malpractice is
not the primary villain, saying
that the astronomic cost of
health care "is often related to
malpracticc, but I don't believe
that's the major cause here in
Texas."
There IS a difference!!!
