Shootin' Blind
(Shooting Blind is an irregular feature in which the editor
comments on the state of the university or universe or the state
of nothing in particular. Remembering this feature's rather
short and inglorious past, the Thresher reminds you that the
opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of anyone
except the writer.)
Last week I noticed that some Wiessman had brought up some
very important questions about the validity of the recent coed
college poll. I agreed with them that all the other colleges
neglected their responsibilities in canvassing their members
and, frankly, not enough people were asked. If those in charge
had used the methods pioneered by LBJ's campaign team in
1948, they could have produced a return of 101%, 113%, or even
120%. With these possible figures, you can see that a ninety-one
percent rate was wholly inadequate.
Survey polls and the like merely show the strides human
intelligence has made in decision-making. The ancients, in
plotting the course of future actions, would read chicken
entrails. The poll is quicker, more accurate, and, not to be
forgotten, less messy.
After careful consideration of the facts about the attitudes
toward coed colleges, the appropriate bodies will make the right
decision. Once they solve the coed problem, the Masters and
Presidents, President Hackerman, and the Board of Governors
will attend to other pressing matters like validating Howard
Hughes' will and making Rice competitive in the SWC.
Some people tell me they were confused by the format of the
survey and the need to rank the answers according to their
second and third preferences. I didn't find this the case. Every
answer I needed to complete the poll was already on the form:
yes, no, maybe, on alternate Thursdays and when Willy's statue
stands up and dances.
It was an adequate choice, except for the questions not asked.
What would you do if your college went coed? The alternative
answers should hav$ been: stay in college, request transfer to a
single sex college, or change sex. Assuming the ultimate step is
taken, how should the colleges be made coed? By building? By
wing? By room? What would happen to peer-bond activities like
the Lovett-Sid Rich-Will Rice shouting matches, or Brown-Jones
toilet paper raids? The list of unasked questions is endless.

Game 'hero' salutes coverage
To the editor:
As much as I feel like
applauding Pete Schwab's
perspicacity in singling me out
for well-deserved attention in
two succesive write-ups of
Parsecs' wins in the Monday
intramural football league, I
feel obliged to point out that
Mr. Schwab's stories have had
no apparent connection with
my actual performance on the
field. Had Schwab some
notion of what actually
occurred at our 42-6 victory
over the Blue Kholrabis (9/26)
and our 25-6 victory over the
Paraplegic Players (10/3,) he
Football program defended
To the editor:
As a member of the present
Rice community, I would like
to venture a reply to Mr.
Robert J. Hilton's letter in the
October 6 Thresher.
I will agree that our footb&ll
program does not support
itself or generate revenue, but
neither do any of the other
varsity sport programs (as you
said). Some of these are
actually winning (e.g. men's
swimming and baseball to
name a few). Just because we
don't have a winning team at
this time is no reason to do
away with our beloved "White
Elephant!" Rice has had
winning teams before; there is
no overwhelming edict that
states we may not win again.
(Or were football players just
smarter in the 50's?)
Many of the students enjoy
going to the games. In Mr.
Hilton's case we may suppose
that he might have been one of
those'imfortunates who do hot
enjoy having fun and
considered football a crime
against the human race. Also,
what do we do with the
football related organizations
(i.e. The MOB)? (Oh, that's
right, The MOB didn't exist
during his entire tenure at
Rice.)
If you are embarrassed to
admit that you have a Rice
winning football team, I
suggest that you just go
somewhere else and get
another one. The worth of a
college degree is not measured
by how well the school's
football team performs. This
would be as ludicrous as not
wanting to admit to your state
of birth because someone you
do not particularly care for
was also born there.
I believe that football is as
needed at Rice as it is
anywhere else. Extra-
curricular activities are what
distinguish a university from
an institute. I for one am glad
that we have a footbal team
and will continue to support
them long after I become a
member of the professional
community. Go Rice!!!
Respectfully yours,
Rebecca Sue Hubby '79

I have hesitated to bring
such a trivial matter to your
attention, since, naturally
enough, I ha ve greatly enj oyed
Schwab's stories, and since
Schwab's imaginative repor-
ting undoubtedly represents
good experience for a future
carefer with a tabloid or
national newsmagazine.
However, it is becoming
difficult for me to face the
innocent, honest countenan-
ces of my teammates, who
must surely by now suspect me
of some sinister connection
with Mr. Schwab, even
though I'm right-handed.
Sincerely yours,
Eric Jensen
Editor's note: Schwab relies on
the game reports filed by
officials to write his reports,
and most errors can be traced
to discrepancies on the score
sheets. The Thresher
suggests that team captains
(at least, the captain of one
squad) check the scoring
summaries after the game.
Besides, the refs always know
what's going on in the game
anyway.
Rice MOB
applauded
Dear Mr. Hackerman:
Please allow me to commend
to you the performance of the
MOB here in Austin last
Saturday. Their performances
have become something of a
legend and a lot of people look
forward to their coming every
other year.
It was indicated in the
October 2 Austin American-
Statesman that the MOB
operates on a very small
budget. While I can fully
appreciate the tight budgetary
constraints, please consider a
substantial increase for the
MOB. They ate great publicity
for Rice University.
Sincerely,
Larry N. Greenhaw
