Catch a Falling Spy, Len
Deighton (NY: Pocket Books

In his novel, Catch a
Falling Spy, Len Deighton
weaves a suspenseful network
of CIA/KGB doublecrosses
reaching from Russia across
Europe to America and back
again to Asia. Professor
Bekuv, Russian radio-
astronomer and suspected
spy, has defected .. or has he?
And his wife—is she the loving
companion she seems to be, or
is she a Russian agent? Just
why would they have defected
anyway? Frederick Antony of
British Intelligence and Major
Mickey Mann of the American
CIA must follow clues leading
to Germany, France, Ireland,
and at last into a daring final
chase across the Sahara
Desert.
An old friend of Mann's is
framed as a Russian agent by
his ex and her husband; a
Senator's assistant is the
KGB's undercover link with
the CIA; a pretty redhead may

be more than just Antony's
loving mistress—these are
only a few of the entangle-
ments that Mann and Antony
must unravel before they dis-
cover the real key to Bekuv's
actions.
But this is more than a flat
cloak-and-dagger adventure
story; it contains a strong
element of human interest.
The caustic Mann, an efficient
intelligence agent, cannot
accept the evidence that his
old school chum and army
buddy is working for the KGB.
Antony loves Red to the extent
of directly disobeying Mann in
order to see her . . with
unsettling results. And the
Professor, quite apart from
any intelligence work, is truly
devoted to his cause—that of
contacting life outside the
Solar system.
Yes, it is an exciting story of
daring undercover intrigue
and deceptions. But is also a
commment on human nature:
that intelligence agents are
people, too.
