Tech nixes pub
by David Butler
The Texas Tech Board of
Regents has voted 7-1 against
a proposal by the Tech Student
Association to establish a
student pub on campus.
The vote followed a poll by
the Tech SA which showed 86
percent of the student body in
favor of the proposal, and an
endorsement of the pub plan
by university president Cecil
Mackey. Opposition to the
proposal, led by the Baptist
Student Union, questioned the
value of allowing "something
on campus that screws our
minds up."
Regent Chairman Judson
Williams commended the SA's
approach in presenting the
plan and decried the anti-
alcohol campaigners: "They
were totally unfair in trying to
turn this into a moral-religious
campaign." But Regent J.
Fred Bucy called the proposal
and presentation "a smooth
PR job" that the SA "was
trying to run through here"
and stated: "I will not support
bringing alcohol on this
campus. . .(Tech) is one of the
last strongholds of conserva-
tism and if we allow this pub
we will be moving down the
road to liberalism and the
socialism that goes with it."
Maybe he'd just been
watching the TV: an associate
judge of the New Mexico Court
has ruled that a 23-year old
woman was contributing to
the worldly education of a 15-
year old boy—not his
delinquency—by engaging in
sexual intercourse with him.
Judge Lewis Sutin, concur-
ring in a 2-1 decision
reversing the woman's
indictment on the charge of
contributing to the delin-
quency of a minor, stated
that "a consensual act
of sexual intercourse engaged
in by a young man is
nothing more than sex
education, essential and
necessary in his growth
toward maturity and sub-
sequent domestic life."
Sutin noted that when the
state legislature abolished
fornication (sex between
consenting—but unmarried—
adults), "it recognized, as a
matter of public policy, that
this conduct did not violate the
mores of the 20th century.
Today, sexual intercourse is
regarded as normal conduct in
the development of a human
being.. .The fact that a normal
young man experiences one
act of sexual intercourse does
not tend to cause or encourage
a perversion of the sexual
instinct."
